So, one of my friends passed his driving test and has been driving a fiesta for a year now. Now he wants something a bit more fun to drive.
One of my friends is a big Tailgate McNoIndicate guy and is trying to convince him to do the same. I'm trying to do otherwise.
What cars are out there that are RWD/4WD and have more than two seats. This is the only requirement. Well also needs to be reliable as a daily.
I think budget is about 5k.
GO!

What's wrong with BMs?
MG v8 thingy would be cool, rare, fast, likely to get him points / killed! (Started typing then remembered he had only been driving for a year!)

You can pick up the old Audi S3 Quattros or the VR6 Passat/Golf Syncros for quite cheap IIRC? Not sure about reliability but cheapest way into 4WD and big power, from what I can see.
Subarus would be the more fun option, I reckon, but finding one that's not been modded/abused will be a challenge.
If he just wants a more fun car, perhaps look at the Clio 182s or the Renaultsport Meganes - FWD but still excellent handling.

I'm really not a fan of Tailgate McNoIndicate's. They all look boring and every other car seems to be one. Don't get me wrong, a nice old Tailgate McNoIndicate would be nice. My dad had a nice one when I were a lad.
I think the Celica GT4 has a bit of interest, and does the RX8.

The lower-spec Celicas have horrible steering through - it's so artificially light and has no 'feel' - so I'm not sure if the GT4 has a similar setup, I reckon it probably does.
The engines on the lower spec models seem very reliable, though, and bodywork-wise they seem to last for ages if looked after, so hopefully the GT4 is the same.

Here's a reason. Electrical problem = nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing, works

So he shouldn't buy one because you don't like them? Pah. If I didn't buy cars because my friends didn't like them, I wouldn't own an MX5...
On the flip side, I rather like BMWs, 3 series have always been known to be a good chassis, even on non-Ms, they use 6 pots, which sound lovely, and they're generally not that expensive - to buy, at least - for the performance you get.

Joking aside when they work they are pretty nice cars. I wouldn't be averse to a 3 series tourer one day... I think for the money and the need for RWD you can't really go wrong with a Tailgate McNoIndicate. Just look out for insurance ?
