So... I have in the past lugged a large box of tools around in the boot 'just in case' of breakdown, although I am far from handy with a spanner and would 99% just call the recovery people after a first look under the bonnet and going "yeah, that's canoeed" lol
With a boot as small as the 5's, though, it means there's no room to carry unnecessary stuff, just what you really need.
So, what would the list of things required for basic maintenance look like for a '5?
I'm not talking about carrying around spare cambelts etc (although perhaps a list of such things would be good for those planning longer jaunts?), just a list of tools with which you could take things off and put things on, and perhaps fix something quickly or ascertain if it's dead.
I'm thinking:
- Spanners - what sizes? Ratchet head and fixed? (Are there only nuts/bolts of a particular size used across the car?)
- Screwdrivers - what sizes? Pozi-drive and flathead?
- Ratchet set - what sizes? What length of extension(s)?
Er... I'm not sure what else??
I'm sure most people on here could have it stripped to a bare shell in 30 minutes on the hard shoulder of the M1 in the pissing rain, but I think the extent of my mechanics skills is pretty clear... LOL

I have:
Long lengthed slot screw driver
10, 12, 13, 14, 15, 17mm spanners
OEM wheel nut spanner and other toolkit bits
A wheel nut "spider" (4 pronged wrench thing with different wheel nut size ends) A big, heavy, adjustable spanner for totally not using as self defence
Halfords ratchet set...the small one
One of those allen key sets that cyclists always have that also has a slot and phillips screwdriver in it
And that usually sees most situations solved

Looks good.. Gaffer/Duct Tape. Zip ties. Knife of some sort -- or combined with a multitool pliers thing (leatherman, gerber, etc are quite decent).

I have my little draper tool kit, that's been gradually losing bits. A fairly full kit, i dont know why i have it in there. If anything breaks while I'm driving I wouldn't know where to start

Besides most of the above I carry a small length, say 1/2 mtr, of twin and earth cable. Comes in handy either stripped or un-stripped for tying up silencers, can be twisted tight to replace broken circlips, temporary nut replacement etc. etc. Cheers, Pewe.

I lug a toolbag with a full toolkit in everywhere. I don't really have anywhere else to keep it! It's heavy but it's saved people numerous times. Loose decats and blowing boost hoses in Europe spring to mind! Flockshop Ron and skuzzle respectively. Plus a Canoe tonne of cable ties.

Don't forget a hammer. Everything is useless if you can't shift that stuck alternator/power steering pump/whatever.

I think you're brave taking a partial kit. I take everything (full socket set, full spanner set, impact driver, a bazillion screw drivers, various pliers/monkey grip/adjustable spanners etc, hammer, saw, clamps, pipes, tapes, string, cable ties, assorted nuts and bolts, electrical wire, spare fuses/bulbs, run on flat, fire extinguisher, jack, bottle of water, engine oil, diff oil, spare belts and AA card) whenever I'm going anywhere that is more than 10 miles away or involves motorsport. Mine is cobbled together though.
You know that when the breakdown occurs you will need that one tool you left at home!

AA card and a mobile phone. That's cause you are a racing driver and so don't do spannering haha
