Boring and predictable but I'll stick with the Mk1. I have a feeling the Mk4 is a big step in the right direction though.

Mk1 for me. I think the mk2 is the best looking if you want to modify but for me - just for the purity of an original, affordable, purposeful sports car - I think the mk1 is very hard to beat...

I like them in order of newest to oldest.
ND the best, NA the worst.
I would say you could also count some of the facelifts for example my NC1 is OK but but the NC3 is really nice.

Im exactly the opposite for the NC range ... I think the NC1 is the nicest before they gave it a silly grin I may be biased though as I own a NC1. I cant get excited about the ND except for the new hardtop version which makes me feel all funny ... NB is worst for me and NA is second to the NC1 but the NA is too similar to the Lotus Elan its based on for my tastes ... |

For the extras you can get without too big a weight penalty, the NB (particularly 2001-2005).
For purity and if I could by one without a divorce, a Mk 1 would be a nice addition, though !
