Is a mk1 and mk2 roof substantially the same except the mk2 has glass rear widow?
Specifically will a mk2 rear window section zip in and replace a damaged rear window section on a mk1?

That kind of depends. Most roofs in decent nick are likely to be aftermarket now, so it's hard to guarantee.

Mk2 glasd window doesn't zip out like the early plastic ones do, the mk2 has a slightly different folding arrangement for this reason.

Similar question, are mk 1 and mk 2 hardtops the same? I'm looking at a cheap (ish) hardtop but it's a distance away. A friend who owns a mk2.5 is visiting his parents there in 2 weeks so could collect as long as the roof off a mk1 will fit on his mk2.5?

I'm not convinced my glass-windowed roof fits my mk1 properly - the rear support bar sags and lets the window flap up and down as soon as you drive off, and I recall reading that it should be possible to put it up with one hand and reaching back from the driver seat with your left hand? Not in mine!!

it's all good as long as you buy a replacement with the frame. mk1 will go on mk2 and mk2 on mk1.
