A byproduct of trying to understand how to get my car through emissions without having to buy ANOTHER shonky 20 year old ECU replacement that still has bullcanoe code 14 faults stored on it led me to look at these here- motorsport-electronics.co.uk/me221-mx-5-miata-plug-n-play-ecu.htmlGood yeah? I basically just want it to make my car work, but I understand they can also facilitate future moneypit projects to make the car MOAR fasterer. Any downsides I should know about? My current understanding is that I should be able to just plug one of these in and everything should work enough to run at least, and despite the immobiliser and my car's 3 plugs of horror BPU2A loom it should run albeit a little rough...Then I contact a man in Wales, send him forty squids and in return he will remote in to my car's brain over t'interweb, do a thing and make it work well enough to idle nicely, hopefully pass emissions and get a canoeing MOT so that I can then spend even more money getting a proper tune on a rolling road? Then the car will work. ?

ME221 is good, works well and Dai is very helpful and knowledgeable In fact all the support for the 221 is good, ME forum plus loads of info on Nutz I have an immobiliser and I have a 94/95 1.8 with a funny loom! But once we got the fuel pump and rev counter working (easy) all is well I then had mine professionally mapped by Skuzzle and is great now

Good to have some opinions from people who actually have these gizmos, cheers folks! I have already been in touch with a nice fellow (also a Matt) at ME who replied very speedily to all of my questions, the only thing nobody can conclusively say is whether or not the thing will pass emissions with the base map/Dai twiddled map until the new ECU has had a proper tune.
Next step is to figure out whether there are actually other problems with the car next time I get a few garage hours before I decide to spunk the money but this is looking like the winning choice all being well and the compression results are still OK.

Pretty sure it's serial on the ECU but you just use a converter.

serial to usb converters are cheap. FTDI job and done.
The ME221s are so good FM are pimping them in the US. That's a gold standard in anglosphere mx5 tuning.

serial to usb converters are cheap. FTDI job and done. Serial to usb converters are cheap and tends to fail as far as I read. Could be the change for problems are smaller than I get the impression of. But if the serial was replaced with an usb port one chain that can break is removed. \\Stian

Just plug a Bluetooth wotsit in to the serial port. Then you don't even need a lead. A little dicking about on a computer to get it working and job done. Even I managed it and I'm basically computer-illiterate.

This is the one I use: m.ebay.co.uk/itm/192047701309?_mwBanner=1They aren't cheap, sure, but it's a lot easier than making your own, which, although cheap, looks a bit too involved. There's a thread on Almonds that shows you how.
