How much extra space to do you get on the parcel shelf by having a hard top over a soft top?
The soft top glass slopes at something like a 45% degree angle, does having a hard top square it off a bit or maybe sit further back than the soft top?
Most days I carry both my little-un in her car seat in the front and my dog sits on the shelf, but he's growing more than expected and its now getting a tight squeeze... is the hard top my solution?

I have a hard top and I've completely removed my soft top. You get a lot of room on the shelf once the soft top is gone - enough for a couple of sleeping bags and a tent

You can get loads on the parcel sh3lf after removing the soft top
Especially if you put a windblocker in there to make it so things cant fall off
For example this weekend i had a 3 man tent, sleeping bag, 3 pillows and a double duvet stored on the parcel shelf and i could still see out the rear window

There's marginally more space with a hard top as its rear panel does indeed sit a couple centimetres further back. I'm afraid you still won't get enough space without getting rid of the soft top though.

I've already had to take the wind blocker out to make room for him, he's still struggling to fit. I'm happy to lose the soft top, providing the extra space gained by swapping over is worth having.
I'll take the punt on payday and get one, see how much room there is...

My gf looks after a staffy which is 2 years old...and it would definitely fit on my parcel shelf with the windblocker...as long as it stayed in one place and lay down!
How big is your dog/what breed?

He's a Husky, and a big one at that. He gets up there with a squeeze and can just about get in to a place where he can lie across the shelf, but as he's only 6 months an already bigger them my in-laws Labrador it's only going to get worse.
The whole inside of the car is also completely covered in white fur as he's molting at the mo.
I've considered putting a fuel cell in the boot and then taking out the fuel tank and lowering the parcel shelf, or possibly taking out the passenger seat and making a smaller seat that can hold my childseat in a way that leaves the dog on the floor, maybe even taking the passenger side off the dash if he needs it, but worried that going that far and failing will leave the car un-sellable.
If the hardtop doesn't give me the space I need I'll try the seat route next I think..

Sounds like you just need a more practical car.

even with the soft top there, you can fit 2-3 backpacks of stuff on the parcel shelf.
also don't forget you can.. ahem, bolt-on a storage thing on top of the hard top. if you want.
don't forget a boot rack, either. With skill and truck-quality ratcheting tie-downs, they work well and are safe.. and if you're smart you can fit 2-3 cases.
