Hi chaps. Hoping for suggestions from the more knowledgeable, polite ones preferably 😁 Picked up a mk1 couple of weeks back. My problem, it's been lowered and where I live is littered with mountain sized speed bumps everywhere. Having to detour by mile and a half to get home. So are there any coilovers I could fit that will allow me to run at standard height or very close to it? It currently has some very low sports springs on it. So thought would make more sense possibly to go to coilovers rather than just sticking new standard springs on and needing to buy new shocks further down the line. Any suggestions from the wise greatly appreciated. Thanks, On.

I think first decide how much you want to spend, that will narrow things down and make it easier to recommend something.

Well, preferably under £400 if at all possible. I think any more than that at the moment would be wasted on setup I can't use to its full potential. As long as I can achieve standard or as close to standard ride height would be great. Then I could spend the extra on a full geo setup. Cheers.

given your budget, i would say go for mk2 standard suspension units with one coil removed from each spring as per RobinM on Nutz
he was after standard ride height and comfort levels, but with a bit more suspension travel - the mk2 suspension set up ended up being the way he went and he raves about it. plus you can easily find a good set for under £200
otherwise, i would avoid the "Ebay" coilovers as they don't give the same ride comfort - your budget could possibly get you some 2nd hand meisters if you are lucky, or some BC or similar

Cheers Corders. Have managed to pick up a full set of KYB New SR Specials with the top hats as well from a mk2. Ordered a set of Tein sport springs. Will I need the bumpstops off a mk2 also?
Slightly off topic, I don't have a PC or laptop. Is it possible to upload photos to the site from a mobile? As I have a bunch of stuff that have taken off the 5 to sell.

Ive tracked and hillclimbed mine and its a nice suspension setup for relatively little cost Edit:- too late, should have read all the posts!!

Haha. Well I'm kind of in the middle of it all. Still waiting on springs. Did you use standard mk1 bumpstops or the mk2? On.

Yup mk2 bumpstops just cut the springs and then unbolted the mk1 suspension and bolted the mk2 in (did the bushes at the same time). It was one of those jobs that actually went extremely smoothly, the suspension on my last 5 was a canoeing nightmare so was quite pleased!

I love the idea of the mk2 stuff on the mk1. I just worry that I'd buy something mostly worn out already.
I want to steer clear of coil overs ideally but the choice for affordable stuff seems limited.

Can't get the shocks I purchased new in the UK as they were Jpn/Asia issue only. So won't truly know until they're on the car so fingers crossed.

Just to ask the question, is the mk2.5 suspension the same as the mk2 suspension? In which case, can the mk2.5 suspension be swapped straight onto a mk1, with top mounts and bumpstops as required? (EDIT: Looks like it is? www.mx5nutz.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=295953#entry3578649) Are the bumpstops an integral part of the suspension unit once assembled? This is apparently 2.5 kit but I'm not sure if it includes top mounts and bumpstops?? If so, does it look any good? I am such a noob lol

the mk2/2.5 thing is mostly changes to the engine. it'll fit fine.
