I will never fit a hard top so the franks are a waste of dead mass. What size bolts simply replace them?

Yeh that'll be as people have been modding these cars since 1989.
Virtually everything that can be done has been done many times over, this is a problem if you've been around a while, but it's great if you're new to the mx-5 as there's so much knowhow.
