Found in a friend's car. Two wires go behind the stereo somewhere. What is it?

dem photos, so high quality.
it's probably a control box for a cd/minidisk multichanger, possibly an in-car dvd player with the "commander display"
one of the inputs may be a remote control too.

And this is why electronics are stupid...
Come the zombie apocalypse / armageddon / rise of Skynet, no-one will be able to fix anything as no-one will have the slightest clue about electronics!
Big ol' V8s and carb-fed old-skool stuff will be the way forward!

This looks like a headunit interface to me, to connect an aftermarket headunit to existing steering wheel controls and digital display.
Don't know why it would have an audio connection though.

Audio connection would be for an input such as an iPhone, eg the Connects2 units of old, would allow you to connect your iPod to an auxiliary in, pre-USB/Bluetooth. Allows you to control the iPod via the HU controls/stalk/steering wheel. Had all this in my 306, was a struggle squeezing all the harness adapters, interface units and steering control harness in to the back but ended up with a nice system.
