Excuse the pun, I'm ashamed for myself, but I'd have been more ashamed had I let it lie...
My gear stick and even moreso the gaitor gets really hot, like the transmission below is as hot as the engine casing.
Just checking if they all do this or I'm due a oil change or imminent failure...

Normal, probably got a split gear stick boot which makes it worse.

the gear stick shouldn't get hot from heat from the gearbox. I don't think the gearbox is capable of getting hot enough to transfer real heat to the knob unless something is really, really wrong, which should involve a horrific-sounding gearbox, driving it really hard, etc. even then the shifter isn't really in direct metal contact with the gearbox.. it's all via nylon bushings (which are crap at heat conduction). it's 99% going to be exhaust heat coming up via a split boot.
