So who else is into electronica?
I've been into it since the early 90s. Despite a few diversions along the way, towards things like Nirvana through to Bjork, I always end up back loving electronica more. It is such a wide spectrum that is covers a lot of things for me: from slow emotional soundscapes to banging tunes, from old classics to new experimentalism. One thing I am currently into inside this wide category is retro futurism: new electronica tunes inspired by 80s arcade games, films and media.
Am I alone? Shall we list and share our favourites?

I am an electronic music producer, so electronica is totally my "thang"! As you say, the term actually covers an incredibly wide spectrum of music - basically anything with synthesizers in it! Personally my preference is for less vocal and more synth, in fact a lot of my favorite electronic muisc is purely instrumental. Some of my favourite sub-genres: - House - Electro - Trance - Liquid DnB - Chillout/Trip Hop Some of my favourite artists: - Jean Michel Jarre: One of the pioneers of electronic music, his stuff still sounds amazing today, nearly 40 years later. I love the vast, ethereal soundscapes he creates, and his completely original and innovative use of synths and samplers. - Massive Attack: Great use of electronic technology and completely unique. They pretty much also pioneered the triphop genre which I absolutely love. - Hybrid: Immense, cinematic soundscapes with driving basslines and amazing riffs. They're like electronica's answer to prog rock. Amazing stuff to listen to at full volume on a good sound system. There are many, many others that I love as well. Personally I have written in a lot of styles over the years. I used to produce a lot of House and Trance back in the day, but more recently I've been getting into the chillout and trip hop genres. I have a YouTube channel for my newer stuff for anyone who likes chilled electronica: The Orphic Creative

Big fan of a lot of the artists mentioned. Also want to mention Underworld.. I've been re-listening to almost everything in their catalogue. Mind-Poetry. really. But for me the last five+ years of electronica have been (for me) about new artists making 80s-influenced music - film and video game style. Really well produced stuff. People with amazing taste of their own making music with very polished feel... Summed up as "19A0s" www.jwz.org/blog/2013/05/the-internet-was-better-during-the-19a0s/boingboing.net/2011/10/11/mixtape-of-the-lost-decade.htmlPilotpriest Lazerhawk Starcadian Lifelike Com Truise Noir Deco Miami Nights 1984 Perturbator VHS Dreams Dance with the Dead Kavinsky (kinda famous now because of some tunes that got into film) Quixotic There are many others - I missed, like 90% .. some are famous, but most art not. Many produced amazing music on budgets that wouldn't feed a london housecat. If you listen to any of the artists I listed it would have to be PilotPriest - heavily influenced by film. I've linked his tracks before in the listening thread... Why ? He's made some tunes I consider works of art.. originality, polish.. energy... and rawness.

Atlex, your post could have been written by me. YES to those tunes! Last year I discovered all those and have been loving them since. Exciting times I started out listening to JMJ Oxygene when I was a kid. Then as a teenager I discovered LTJs Logical Progression, an album which flicked a switch in my mind. I virtually had that on loop in '95. Orbital Insides was another classic, along with Underground. Then many years followed finding out what I liked.

Orbital's "The Box" Kind of remixes itself in your head. Then they break out harpsichord. Harpsichords are manic because they have no soft sound - it isn't like a piano. Perfect for this tune.

Enjoying your stuff Meerkat Some of it reminds me of the mechwarrior2 soundtrack stuff by Jeehun Hwang. Cheers mate! Yeah I can definitely see the resembelence there. I like using wierd industrial sounds in my work, or taking normal sounding instruments and twisting them to the point that they sound completely unrecognisable. I like listening to music and going "Is that a piano? Or a Gong? Or an eggwhisk??" If you listen to any of the artists I listed it would have to be PilotPriest - heavily influenced by film. I've linked his tracks before in the listening thread... Why ? He's made some tunes I consider works of art.. originality, polish.. energy... and rawness. Loving the PilotPriest stuff! Definitely need to get me some of that in my library. Funnily enough I'm actually just about to start a new project on my Orphic Creative channel where I get hold of old 80's synths and use them to make a track. Each track will only use sounds taken from that synth, but I will allow myself the freedom to manipulate or twist the sounds using filters or processing to make some more varied or interesting effects. Should be a fun challenge.

I love random samples and sound clips in tunes. David Holmes wanders NY and records conversations with hookers and tramps to good effect.
Bladerunner soundtrack is another long term favourite. Any cool film samples are good for me.
I will check out some of the links which are new to me and get back with something later.

That's a great list of artists, I recognise a few but looking forward to exploring some new ones By the way Hans Zimmer is one of my all-time favourite score composers. His Inception soundtrack is my personal fave, but the Interstella one is amazeballs too.

Kinki if you like samples, The Avalanches "Since I Left You" is a journey through film and music, 3,500 samples used on that album! Really enjoying the Hospital podcast at the moment. Always good variety (although it is predominantly DnB, naturally). I like that Tony Coleman is a bit older than the average listener, makes for a more mature taste in music. You have to put up with the occasional political viewpoint but on the whole it's great I'll spend this afternoon checking out the above!

I was hugely into Hospital years ago. I used to really spank out their albums until I over did them. Plus Goldie, at the time. Now I prefer the slightly more chilled stuff as my clubbing days are long gone. Also I tend to get into music which allows me to work on my computer at the same time. So stuff like BOC, Yagya, Ulrich, etc are perfect for that. Maybe not that exciting on the face of it, but pleasant background tunes. When I don't have to work I tend to go for the more exuberant tunes like Mitch Murder and MN84 etc.

Not really electronica, but related to sampling old computer games... Just listened to a song by D Double E - Street Fighter Riddim - sample-tastic! No prizes for guessing where the samples come from
