I think I've exhausted my knowledge and patience for this one, it's time to get the tuner in. I think (possibly) I've knackered my plugs as it initially ran so rich I thought I'd dead piston rings like the first engine. So new plugs on the way and the COPS kit has shipped. But I've adjusted all the settings I should and I can't get it to start now, I think I've made things increasingly difficult for myself with this BP4W head swap , as it's a bit of mish-mash of an engine. Hopefully be worth it in the end!
I hope the turbo kit doesn't fight me as much as the ECU or it'll be 2023 before it's back on the road

Just pay a man who knows what he's doing... It makes the first drive all the sweeter if you let it 'rest' for a couple of years...

The manifolds been helicoiled out to m10x1.5....how did I discover this, test fitting studs and one backed out and marred the flange face.
Not having much luck, it's gonna fight me the whole way.

Managed to get the machine shop to fix the manifold Helicoil and damage, when I went to collect the Turbo and Downpipe elbow, so that was a bonus. It would appear whoever has tapped out the hole has gone too far and you're not meant to do that, as the Helicoil will back out. Anyway, some freshly faced flanges: IMG_20220506_181748 by Scott Reid, on Flickr COPS kit arrived from GFB developments on Friday, so set about fitting it on Sunday, fairly simple install, they look pretty good in place: Before: IMG_20220508_190747 by Scott Reid, on Flickr After: IMG_20220508_194236 by Scott Reid, on Flickr I tested for spark, grounding a plug on the block, you can certainly tell the difference between the stock coilpack output and these Toyota units, glad I didn't zap myself with these ones! Anyway, still no joy with starting, so now just waiting for the tuner to free up, going to spend some time assembling the turbo, the Flyin' Miata Youtube series is a seriously handy reference material, taking some of the guess work out of everything.

Spent some time assembling the turbo, had to clearance the turbo exhaust flange slightly more than I had to get it to sit flush down without some persuasion....Fairly getting my moneys worth from my round file. I've fitted a 0.9mm reducer to the oil inlet, as it's a BB turbo and not a journal bearing, there's mixed opinions on if that's required, but I've got the non reducer fitting handy if it's needed. IMG_20220509_220139 by Scott Reid, on Flickr Copper locknuts with Nordloc washers: IMG_20220509_221502 by Scott Reid, on Flickr Mocked up the coolant lines, with new copper crush washers and fire sleeve hose, I've got some leftover I'll run on the oil drain: IMG_20220509_221447 by Scott Reid, on Flickr IMG_20220509_221651 by Scott Reid, on Flickr Also pre-loaded the turbo by 2mm on the actuator, which got clocked to point the port away from the engine. Fitted the studs to the downpipe elbow, thought that was all, fitted up the exhaust and the flange needed a bit round file attention to get it to fit flush. Moral of the story, buy 2nd hand spend twice as much time on it!

This thing continues to fight me all the way, whether it be ECU or turbo kit. ECU, even with the tuner running through the tune and me fault finding on the car, we still couldn't get anything other than cranking. We've got spark and we've got fuel, even the application of throttle has no effect. UNTIL! a quick email to BOFI to see if I'd left some covers on the injector tips, rather than pulling them back out, as well as a brief explanation of my engine setup and have I missed something..... Turns out the mk1 and mk2, return less fuel systems, both operate at 3Bar. The 4Bar is for the mk2.5 only. Will find out later if that's it, because that'll need: Required Fuel, Injector Dead Time, Injector Voltage Correction, all changed to the 3bar figures. Fingers crossed. Spent some more time trying to get the down pipe ready for installation, for some reason 1 stud on the elbow needs shortened as the holes not tapped as far down as the others. But, the sensor bosses, the one I was intending to use seems to have a hole in it, almost as though the material was too thin before it was tapped. 2022-05-11_11-30-47 by Scott Reid, on Flickr I'm hoping that's fixable, would it be as simple as cutting out the old boss and fitting a new one? I'll take it to an exhaust place and see what they say. This 2nd hand kit seems to be developing additional costs at it's leisure.

the gift that keeps giving? the sensor bosses, the one I was intending to use seems to have a hole in it, almost as though the material was too thin before it was tapped. OR, rotted away? stainless pipe & mild steel fitting / boss? easily would it be as simple as cutting out the old boss and fitting a new one? ^^This I'll take it to an exhaust place and see what they say probably sucking-noise through teeth and something about expensive £5 m14 boss from ebay and a local weldist Rich.

probably sucking-noise through teeth and something about expensive £5 m14 boss from ebay and a local weldist Rich. 100%. Weldiste. Take some cash. Maybe clean up the area first yourself. I have several M14 bosses just laying about and I'm sure some us on here do too. They come with most good widebands.

Thanks both, going to take it to a guy in work and see what he can do, I'll order a new boss pending what he says or take it to an exhaust place I've used before. I've got the tap for it already and it's M18x1.5 for both of them, there's one up by the turbo and one in the normal place on a manifold. I had intended using the furthest from the turbo. Anyway, car still won't start so it's not like I'm in a rush to get this fixed just yet, although I'm glad I caught it now and not when the cars up on jack stands.

look at how flared that current cracked boss is, it's NFG. you need a thickboss on there, it won't be so cracky.

NFG as in "Not Canoeing Good" I understand what you mean, I'll see if it can be fixed as it sits, if not I'll get the boss ordered, I've not managed to catch him yet. End goal would be a Kraken Mani and DP so it won't need to survive too long. The other option is just blank it off and use the sensor bung up beside the turbo, do you know where your lambda is located on your exhaust? I thought close to the turbo would cook the sensor but that may be unfounded.

Just cut it off and drill it out a bit so you can get a new one welded in properly. The one you get in the box with an AEM gauge looks similar. THICK.

whats 4mm between friends? anyway, using the boss near the turbo shouldn't be a problem, the whole lot gets hot Rich.
