This is probably a dumb idea but as I plan to go hard to only I would like to make sure my top stays on. I know there are several companies selling security mounts but they all use common security fasteners for which the unlocking tools are freely available, so, how about riveting the plates on.
My idea (feel free to pull this to bits)
M6 and M8 stud's drilled through the centre to accept a pop type rivet. I know the M6 would have very little material left around the outside after drilling but its hardly taking any load (this would be for the side mounts only)
If this is doable a thief would have to drill out all four (or six) lower rivets to lift the top.
Stupid idea or not?

jass bolt-in mounts are good.. but I wouldn't bother with extra rivets, thieves aren't really after mx5s ?

... also consider all the other ways you can nick the car. The hard top isn't exactly the weakest spot... Shimmy between the window and rubber seal is enough. Our locks are probably pressure-blowable too with the tennis ball method.

Not concerned to much about the car, more like some scumbag making a quick buck from my hardtop. Was at a mates garage today and they undone a set of wheel security bolts with basic tool in seconds. Wouldn't be so easy if they had to drill them out first

I had my hardtop bolted on for good, not with rivets, just eight security bolts. Used plates from Rennenmetal but I don't think they're in business anymore.

Other thought... Weld-in the bolts :-)

If you put in a flange (or "washer") between the bolts and what they are bolting into, and then just weld the edges of the bolts to that 'tab'/'flange' - it might give you the security you're after.
If they're *really* that after your hardtop I think they'll just nick the car tho.

If they're *really* that after your hardtop I think they'll just nick the car tho. If they are professional you're unlikely to stop them (that said I think they would want a car with a higher spec than mine) and there would be little you could do to stop them, what would piss me off though is loosing the top because I didn't try to make it as difficult to remove as I could, if it still went I'd say fair play to them. Ran the idea past my mate with the garage (the one removing security bolts with ease) and he though it a good idea

Pop rivets are super easy to break... wouldn't you rather they did as little damage breaking in to your car? What deters thieves is time. The longer it takes to steal something the more risky it gets. To remove a bolted on hardtop is like 8 bolts. If you JB Fab mount (or similar) a seat in so that it restricts access to the bolts even on one side that's another four bolts to move the seat. Lots more elegant solutions to drilling riveting and welding I'm sure!

I have never heard of a hardtop being stolen before so I would say you may be putting effort in to avoid something that won't happen
Go for the Jass latches and install them with some sort of thread lock stuff if you don't want to be removing the bolts easily again

I agree with Corders - security bolts with red loctite would be almost impossible to get off. My old hard top latch bolts has red loctite on them and it took me about 4 hours and lots of heat and swearing to get them off.

red loctite would require similar time/heating equipment as removing welds would... :-)
