oh wise men and women of 5's,
could i have your opinions and experiences of coilies please?
i am looking at replacing mine as in my opinion they are a little tired and baggy. Car is a 1.6 turbo with about 230 bhp. It is used for weekend hoons, 6-10 trackdays a year and euro holidays so looking for good all rounders. Preferably they would have top adjustable damping control 'cos i cant be rear canoed-ed to lay on the floor to tweek.
Currently on Gaz with adjustable front damping but nowt on the rear and these are set for decent track work and the ability to have a reasonable ride on the road without changing any settins.
anything you can add would be greatly appreciated.
cheers
Darren

Meisters always get recommended in this situation for very good reason. They have plenty of travel, lots of adjustment and you can get extenders for the rear adjusters so you won't have to reach round stuff to get to them (I have these and they are worth every penny). Plus the customer service is great
All the other well known names are also great choices for much the same reasons, but some of them have less rear shock length and therefore less good for road use (looking at hsd mainly here). Gaz have very good customer service too in my opinion
Another one to consider is Protech- the guys who manufactured the widely celebrated P5 shocks from about 10 years ago on Nutz

I considered many options and kept reading about Meisters to the extent where I thought it was all hype, then I got some and found out why everyone recommends them!👍😁 There are better if you spend more but you won't get better for the price

I was talking to someone who runs a fleet of racing MX5s and they consider Meisters to be a "cheap option" he also said that they tend to remove what he called cheaper and "jap tat" coilovers off the cars when they buy them and he has a load of these spares stored - PM me if interested, you could ask him what he has, he's Somerset based also there are some meisters for sale on FB here- www.facebook.com/groups/599145706887141/?fref=nfneed to be quick though

I was 2 seconds a lap quicker round Goodwood on HSD mono pros than MeisterRs (Monopros brand new & Meister Rs done about 5 000 miles). Both perfectly usable on the road & top adjustable.

Whilst I have been a big fan of my Meisters they haven't lasted very long, each one of mine has leaked quite a bit and need rebuilt less than 2 yrs old.
Whilst it's fair to say I give them harsh treatment my other cars have never had these issues so soon.
I've been in contact with Meister about sorting them though and they have made all the right noises and seem happy to do so, which is a positive, not every company will, I've just not had the time/weather to take car off the road to do so, something for end of season.

My mk1 came with HSD Dualtechs, on close to maximum damper stiffness, with increased spring pre-load.
Gone back to HSD pre-load settings and currently trying to find the best damper setting, almost on maximum soft and it's still quite a firm ride. Although road conditions aren't great up this way so that's another factor.

Which model of Meisters? Same spring rates etc? Genuinely interested as obviously that's a big difference if everything else was the same.
Meister seems to be constantly developing their products and there is a good range to cater for most now, I'm running the CRD's but with stiffer springs to almost match the CRD plus and I'd say they're very good for driving to and on the track (with damping adjusted for each), I haven't tried other suspension on the MX5 though so can't compare.
I'd say the CRD plus would be ideal for what you're after.

howardb66 Wasn't your last visit your first time there so that 2s extra time could just as easily be the extra experience you've gained with car and circuit since?

Ohlins are incredible. Well worth the cash.
I run AST dampers that are custom valved as per 949 racing Xidas. They like Ohlins are not cheap but you get what you pay for. The AST performance is fantastic on track. They are good on the road too but not quite as silky, finessed and plush as the Ohlins though.
Re: the ASTs Youd never believe they are 700lb front spring and 400lb rear rates driving on them on the road. The damping adjustment is just superb. Id say as a competition car damper the ASTs are spot on as are the Ohlins . The Ohlins would be my pick if I was buying soley for road with a few trackdays. Must be the best all rounder out there.

thanks chaps, i can see that opinions are varied and its a matter of what suits each individual. I must admit a few years back i had Koni's on a long term Eunos and these were amazing and easy to adjust the damping to suit. Should have took these off when i sold the car Was swaying t'ward Meisters as i have read and heard good stories then Sandys come upwith his woes. is im quite "enthusiastic" on or off track i could do with something that would last more than two years between rebuilds....... PM'd you Ricky ref your post. off to do some research on the HSD's V CRD's
