Ultimately Apextwin is right - it is all about money - meisters, BC, GAZ etc are a cut above cheap ebay tat but they are still the "cheap - mid range" part of the market. Also its very dependent on what you want to do, if you are on track and want to be competitive then you may as well spend the money, but if as i do, you use the car for a bit of summer cruising and roof down fun as well as track work then the meister is a nice compromise for the price. They are so much better than a standard suspension, thats for sure!!

As above really... all these Taiwanese options that get 'rave' reviews are only about £150/corner - you don't get much for that amount of cash really, a set of toyo R888Rs are only a bit cheaper per corner! Having tried many different setups over the years from KYB AGX (when they were the 'go to' choice), GAZ and finally Ohlins DFV I think I've seen a fair cross section of the market. Each step does give you noticeably better performance, there's definitely a case of diminishing returns tho, each step is basically 2x the money. The Ohlins are incredible and side by side with apextwins 'Zeedah' spec ASTs I would totally agree with his assessment. With regards to cost, lets face it, most of our cars we have spent ££££ times what anyone half sensible would do on a 25yo cheap japanese roadster, so "is it worth it?" is completely subjective The thing I'd like to know is, how good are the 3 way Nitron R3 at 2x the price again!

With the Meisters you can go GT1 which are similar to Ohlins in ability with dual stage damping but they are also similar in price, they will build them to match your specification with spring rates you desire, valved appropriately or they can help your decide a spec based on what you are doing with the car and its weight, quite good service really.

Meisters with the 0% interest deal, if they still do that.

Having tried Ohlins and Meister GT1 back to back, I don't think they are the same at all. The Ohlins have a subtlety that the Meister just can't match. The way they recover after a bump is just on another level. Xida / AST are on the same level as the Ohlins, as are the Quantum Zeros I have ... although the Quantums are more of a track / race option and need rebuilds periodically
My favourites out of all the mid range shocks I've owned (Meister, HSD, BC, Gaz, Koni etc) are the Koni shocks, with Gaz second. Saying that, the amount of knowledge at Gaz shouldn't be underestimated ... they can rebuild and re-gas shocks to many different specs. Arguably the fastest track MX5 I know of (Malcolm's Yellow endurance race car) is on Gaz

Just fitted hsd dual tech suspension seems a little harsher than i was suspecting but the handling is amazing compared to the eBay units i had on before.

I was told that the Ohlins couldn't go go as low as some others? I was looking at getting some, but that put me off.

I was told that the Ohlins couldn't go go as low as some others? I was looking at getting some, but that put me off. Online are all about performance handling and ultimate lows don’t really feature in that. From a handling point of view the ideal ride height is having the wishbones level at rest with the car at normal weight.

^^this
That said, mines down to about 4" pinch weld heights after using some FEAL top mounts on the rear. Lower is faster up until you start sacrificing bump travel to get there and the NA is pretty limited in this department.
Out of the box they weren't super low but probably sensible road usable height.

Good info to know on the ride height.
I need to raise mine after starting to take off the paint in the inner arches on the compressions at Knockhill.

I was told that the Ohlins couldn't go go as low as some others? I was looking at getting some, but that put me off. all depends on what you want from the car & suspension? the ability to corner at speed? OR Scene-points for lows? for the cornering then spend | £1500+ on Ohlins, if its scene-points & flattened frame-rails then £150 on egay cheapo coilies will do the job I went the Ohlins route (secondhand as I'm on a budget) ride hight is 310mm measured from wheel / hub centre to top of wheelarch (front & rear) with 2mm of preload on the springs Rich.

You do me an injustice gentlemen, I'm all for handling. I don't give a toss for huge sticking out wheels and scraping on the ground. I was looking for a fast road set up only. I can't afford to do track days unfortunately. It was the guys at Blink that mentioned the ride height. I was going to get the Ohlins from them.
