haha! Will be good to be able to keep an eye on everything, though Have you seen the version of the panel that runs across the front of the passenger area that has three dial holes in it, angled at the driver? It might have been in a pic on here somewhere, I can't remember now... It would kind of be out of direct eyeline, but then down by the radio panel is as well! It would mean you could keep a phone holder lol

It's cool, I will put them in the center. I will make a hidden magnet holder maybe under or in front of the shorty gear shifter.

Guys, just in case...which is the strongest version of the six speed MX5 gearbox out there? From which age / model please? Assuming the bolt pattern is exactly the same as the five (which I think it is, but just double checking)... just thinking ahead in case of issues...
Thanks all

I think this is it..
From strongest to weakest: NB2/FL 2002+ Mazdaspeed Miata (supposedly shotpeened internals and other small improvements to better handle turbo torque) NB2/FL 2002+ (small updates to the original 6 speed) NB1 1998 10th anniversary (first 6-speeds)

Food for thought- Caterham use 6 speed MX5 gearboxes on their road cars & 5 speeds on their race cars.

Nothing's been happening for the last week and wont start again for another two unfortunately. The over run on engineering the spacer has caused a clash with other projects: race cars and a turbo conversion. Next on the list is the manifold and down pipe work. So I'll update later on. For now I'm busy with Hi-Fi speaker builds, work, watching the summer slip by while driving my other halfs Audi

I made a new center panel from black anondised aluminium. This mounts to a pair of hidden stainless steel brackets behind the OEM facia.

I prefer the original dead plain blank panel I had. But I guess this will be useful. I wouldn't personally want them up high on the dash or on a pillar, where they would be a touch "in your face". I also went for a more retro analogue solution, rather than the light show of digital versions.
Re: gearbox options.
I'd far rather stick to my five speed if possible. I like the idea of the gearbox cooling solutions. However I'd need to find a sensibly priced one.

You may be OK with the 5 speed at 'standard' v6 powers. They are cheap as chips though, so if you do break on it's not a massive cost, just time to swap! I think 90% of the issues with breaking the 6 speed is mechanical, the 10% is heat as most people that break them have a turbo exhaust a few mm away from it which cooks the fluid, which then doesn't help with the other issues... I ran a 5 speed on road and track with 280+FW BHP and didn't break it. Much much nicer action than the 6 speed too!

I guess a turbo exhaust runs hotter than an NA exhaust?

I guess a turbo exhaust runs hotter than an NA exhaust? I'm not sure that's valid in general, but most people at those power levels are running 2.5 or 3" exhausts which run very close to the side of the box as there's not a lot of clearance in the transmission tunnel. On track temps will be considerably higher again due to the sustained loads - I think Niklas mentioned people had seen 170+C on track inside the gearbox!

Crazy! Is it worthwhile wrapping the exhaust in any particular heat shield material?
