I'm thinking of doing some road/navigational rallies in my Eunos Mk1, but the few times I've driven it at night, the spread from the main beams is quite narrow so it's difficult to be as confident on narrow lanes as I'd like.
Has anyone fitted a set of additional/auxiliary headlights to a Mk1? Any recommendations/avoidations?
Thought I couldn't go far wrong with a pair of £20 Ring ones from Halfords, as if they're crap, I've not wasted too much money. A friend of mine has them on his Mk2.5 but I'm not sure of what to attach them to on a Mk1, or how tricky the wiring will be.
Alternatively, are there any other ways to improve the Mk1 headlights?

what are your current headlights in the mk1 ? several of us swear by the raybrig 7" units and some stronk bulbs like nightbreakers. if you can't find the raybrigs, the wipac units are fairly decent too. Alternatively look for some 7" truklite or equivalent LED replacements. I'm not sure about using LED bulbs in these when a designed-to-be-LED-7" should outperform... At this point in the bulbgame I see no point getting incandescent units to 'add' to your car... I've fitted some LED spots to my carib tho and fitted some yellow tint on them which spreads the beam into more of a flood., might help trying that path ? the LEDs are like very strong DRLs during the day and are basically illegal nono don'tdothat at night if there's any oncoming traffic. perfect for low traffic country lanes or offroading. These are the units. Mine have been on for over a year and performed flawlessly : www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2pcs-4-Inch-6-LED-18W-Spot-Flood-Beam-Work-Light-Off-Road-Car-Truck-Boat-12V/123860842038?hash=item1cd6ae7636:m:m02iX0zrk6ugxZNyIoOzABAStrong enough that, if there's anything that reflects anywhere ahead if you, it becomes VERY apparent that it is there. you'd spot a 1ftx1ft road sign over a mile away.

I don't know whether my current headlights are anything other than OEM, but they don't have a very good spread.
Will need to work out how and where to fit any extras, but what are the legalities of additional LEDs? I've read some stuff that says they're not permitted on the road.

I'm very pleased with my LED 'trucklite copies' - a ridiculous amount better than the OEM candles, but apparently won't get through the MOT due to not have a super-sharp beam cut-off (but then a few screws to swap is not too much hassle ) They have a wide Low Beam pattern which makes them good for the twisty country lanes, but it can be too good in motorway contraflows - the cones each side become distractingly blinding from reflections! lol Snomad swears by www.lazerlamps.com/home/lights on his truck, but they are certainly towards the more expensive end of the spectrum. I'm considering getting a couple / a bar to mount in the 'mouth' of the bumper - the 'trucklites' are good but no match for morons with blinding OEM LED headlamps so it would be nice to have 'equal firepower' in that sort of situation.

God knows what those are. raybrigs seem hard to find the UK compared with Wipacs. look for wipacs ? don't get a combo kit unless the h4 bulbs are the ones you actually want

I'm actually after a set of europe-appropriate LED 7" headlights now because that's where I am and I will probably need them to pass the local test.

Hi, I am using the Wipac units with uprated bulbs 90/140w Not much different to the Raybrig unit in output with similar bulbs. The units cope with the lamp output and give very good light. The Mk 1 has got strong points for towing under the nose which could have a rally lamp bracket made up to use them as a mount and get the lamp units high enough to be usefull. The nose of the car will have to come off to fix brackets. The only other way would be a light pod in front of the bonnet.

Have a look on the Defender forums - they use the same lights as the 5 and the aftermarket is massive compared. I've got hand me down Wipac lights on the 5 after I upgraded to Trucklites on the Defender For additional lighting on the 5, I'd probably look at a small LED bar mounted in the mouth between the tow hooks - you can pick these up really cheaply now and they are stupidly bright - you can get spot/flood/combination in a variety of sizes... eg. www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LED-Work-Light-Bar-Spot-Flood-Roof-Lights-Driving-Lamp-Offroad-Car-SUV-ATV-360W/173262445744(random seller from ebay, no connection)

I'm thinking of doing some road/navigational rallies where are you located? I used to rally (road & stage) and iirc, english association rules forbid spotlamps (or additional driving lights) luckily for me, Welsh association rules allowes a maximum of 4 foreward facing beams so spotlights were used (but any road-rally that started in Wales but crossed the border meant no additional lamps ) although I've not competed for ~10 years so rules could have changed Rich.

So I'll check out the standard options.
Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

I did the scatter rally last night, and actually the headlamps on main beam were fine. I do need to get a more powerful reversing light though, combination of slightly milky rear plastic screen and pitch darkness meant I really couldn't see anything behind when doing 3/5/7 point turns in narrow lanes!
The other thing I need to sort is the ride height. I still haven't raised it and it's too low for those middle of the road speed humps, let alone the sort of rocks, tree branches and detritus being washed down the lanes last night. Best bit was the flooded roads where I literally had a bow wave going, the sidelights were shining out from under the surface! And got to the other side where some twonk in a Range Rover was chickening out of going through it.

I really couldn't see anything behind when doing 3/5/7 point turns in narrow lanes! you need to try harder.... 1999 on a local roadrally but when the wheel falls off (literally....) 2001 when running-in an engine & a halfshaft snapped, minor roll lasted 125 yards...... Rich.

Ouch! Was that the end of that car, or did you buff it out?
My navigator enjoyed himself last night and we were the top novice crew, so I'm hoping he might join me for some 12 Cars in the autumn. I have been in the left seat for a few years so it was nice to be driving for a change...
