Now just need to fix the coolant leak from the manifold I put back on. Thankfully it was an easy fix. When I took the manifold off again, it was pretty obvious what was wrong, and it was yet another basic cockup on my part - the gasket was on back to front (so the coolant holes weren't lined up properly). Put it on the right way round, did it all up again, topped it up and Bob's yer muvva's bruvva. Went out for a little spin last night just to check all was OK, and it was all good, apart from a slight whistling noise. Will have to work out what that is at some point!

After killing the engine at Lydden Hill a couple of weeks ago, I've just taken delivery of the replacement - from a JDM Eunos (on eBay) being broken by Synetiq, who seem to be a big chain of breakers. Came with all the ancillaries still attached as far as I can see, but I'll be swapping a few bits over anyway. They left some of the wiring attached and just cut through others, I suppose they got fed up doing it properly and just wanted it out once it sold.
Ordered a timing belt/water pump and various gaskets to replace before it goes into the car, and I've started taking bits off the dead engine in preparation for getting it out. Considering doing a coolant reroute as well, is it worth it?

Thanks, I've already got a load of stuff in my basket! My general plan is to get the replacement engine in the car without too many modifications, so I can be back on the road in time for rally season starting 7 October. Once it's running with the replacement I'll probably dismantle and rebuild the original engine with a few enhancements, add ITBs but keep it NA so I can stay in the <1600 cc class for speed events. Thinking maybe head skim and cams, but that will probably snowball! Got to finish the Isetta too...

Picked up that Megasquirt ECU last week, with a lambda sensor. Will probably not try to do anything with it until the new engine is in and working, but need to start learning how I'm going to use it, what I'll need for mapping etc.
Also while taking the air box out of the way, I couldn't get the AFM sensor cable off so I undid the screws and pulled, that seems to have been a bad idea!

Done that, you’ll have to take the top of the AFM and do a bit of soldering. Lots of info on the web and Miata.net

Plenty of movement since I last posted in here (some is in the WHYDTY5T thread and elsewhere), so a quick summary: I undid everything connected to the engine, struggled with the exhaust side and starter motor but with a lot of swearing and scraped knuckles, got it all off. Hooked up the engine crane and undid the engine mount bolts under the wheel arches. Lifted it out: Bit gunky in the bellhousing and I'll be replacing the release bearing as it was a bit noisy: Put it on the workmate temporarily as the replacement engine is on the engine stand: The clutch plate was pretty thin so I'll put a new one in, and change the spigot bearing while I'm at it. Less than 2 weeks until we're due to do the Tour of Kent so need to keep pushing along...

Good progress last night, intake and fuel rail back in, alternator back on, CAS and electrical stuff plugged back in, exhaust on at the manifold (need to attach to the bellhousing and connect to the centre pipe underneath). Tonight hopefully finish the exhaust, put the power steering pump back on, connect up the belts, give everything another tighten up and then get the radiator and intake back in. Will need to solder the AFM back together as I doubt it'll run without that?

Will fire but not run until you re-solder the AFM…

Will fire but not run until you re-solder the AFM… or fit a bridging-wire to complete the fuelpump circuit (if using a standard ecu? ) Rich.

Will fire but not run until you re-solder the AFM… or fit a bridging-wire to complete the fuelpump circuit (if using a standard ecu? ) Rich. Yeah, I took the top off the AFM last night, and watched a couple of videos (including 'how to take the connector off', bit late for that ). I reckon I can get it done OK, but have ordered a used one off eBay just in case I Coxswain it up or it's permanently broken. If all else fails I'll bodge it with the bridging wire but that'd make it pretty crap to drive I think. Got the power steering pump back on and did the aux belts last night. Reconnected the exhaust with a new Jass bracket to hold the downpipe to the bellhousing, and went to put the heatshield on but discovered I'd mislaid the bracket that sits under the top couple of bolts on the manifold, and it was late by then so I gave up and went to bed.
Tonight's jobs: fit the heatshield, put the radiator back in, fit a new shroud to the fan (after the old one fell off the shelf and one side of it broke off) then refit that, solder the AFM, fit the intake pipe back on and see if it'll start! Then just the bonnet back on, change the wheels over and take it for a drive before the Tour of Kent on Sunday....

Got it all back together, the new shiny Jass exhaust heat shield has three holes but one of the brackets on my exhaust manifold has rusted off so I could only use two. Then the shiny bolt sheared off in the lower hole. Will see if it rattles itself free when driving and needs to be removed. Put the radiator and fan back in, attached the intake crossover pipe, reconnected the fuel pump relay and it started! My soldering of the AFM was obviously inadequate though, as it didn't run very well. The replacement AFM is due to arrive today so hopefully that'll sort it. Clutch felt quite soft, it was never very firm but maybe I need to bleed it?
Need to fill the coolant up and put the bonnet back on. Also mustn't forget to refit the front ARB!

Yet another facepalm moment. The ebay AFM arrived yesterday, so I popped up to the garage this morning before work and fitted it. Once it was in place, I realised that when I had first started the car on Wednesday night, I didn't actually attach the cable to the one I soldered! So it might have worked fine. Duh.
Anyway since the replacement has arrived and is now fitted, I'm not going to swap it back over to find out. I started the car and it idled fine, a bit high maybe, but it was cold. Fair bit of smoke coming out of the exhaust by the manifold, so will tighten the bolts and see if it settles down, or maybe take it off and put some instant gasket underneath. Proper test drive tomorrow to iron out the kinks!
