Wanna find someone local with a dyno to run it in on ? Of course, you'll have to tow it there. Already investigated... 200chf for 20 mins Plus another 200ish for transport.

If the engine actually runs, check the oil hasn't got that metallic flecked painted look developing after a little while of running Yeah, that's the next step after running it up a bit... Have new oil and filter waiting to go in Just fu cking terrified of completely sha gging the engine. I guess there's not a lot I can do now. If it's Canoe ed, it's just how long it lasts...

That ticking noise is the hydraulic lifters tapping, pretty normal on most Roadsters often it happens on first start up but goes away after the temps come up as they don't have full lubrication initially. If it continues to tick its usually either a sticky lifter or oil age/weight related. This can be sorted by a flush and new/oil filter most of the time. If it doesn't tick when cold but then starts to tick when hot, or a hot start then look at a different oil/weight. I've used Millers 10W40 and 10W50 which solved the hot tick on mine.
Smoking mani is probably just dust/crap or oil/coolant thats got spilled in there, unless something is on fire then I wouldn't panic too much.

Does sound like ticky lifters indeed ^ Also you can expect a wee bit of oil to go into the lifters if they were all drained down, it sits in there. I expect it's less than 100ML total to fill them tho. They would drain down if the car was left for.. years.. :-) Lifters should fill and noise should go after a 1-3 heat cycles. Even just revving the engine once warm should help. As for the smoke, that should go away too. Good luck with your nayboors!!

I was hoping that's what it was... I had same problem before, but this is a completely rebuilt head.
I'm just panicking again. Thank you for calming me down...

Ok, i've got it running, and started to do a bit of warming up and it's making a hell of a noise... You're doomed.... engines toast.... wait till the hydraulic cam followers 'pump-up' & hope it don't detonate The manifold is smoking, but expecting that to burn off rubbish that has collected in it. Shit happens, oily handprints etc cause smoke..... so does Fire There is oil pressure - the oil pressure gauge is reading right at the top of the scale and increases when I increase revs. I remember it always being quite high before the rebuild if you're using an early standard oil pressure guage then take the reading with a pinch of salt, if you've a 'real' gauge then how high? -too much pressure can damage bearing material.... Nothing leaking on the floor Result If the engine actually runs, check the oil hasn't got that metallic flecked painted look developing after a little while of running Yeah, that's the next step after running it up a bit... Have new oil and filter waiting to go in Just fucking terrified of completely shagging the engine. I guess there's not a lot I can do now. If it's fucked, it's just how long it lasts...metalic filings in oil is not uncommon in new engines BUT usually caught in the filter so normally unseen..... if it's gonna detonate then it's gonna detonate.... Rich.

Zed - the voice of, er, comfort? I find my noisy tappets/lifters take ages to go away with no load on the engine, even revving it a bit. I would say go for a drive once it's got some temperature in it, but...

But the worst bit is the fu cking noise. Sounds like a bag of spanners. Is... That... Normal? Please say yes .. Its normal if you have hydraulic lifters and they have bled themselves down over time.
The rattle should go away over a few minutes, sometimes one stubborn one will tick for quite a long time, but it too should eventually pump itself up.

I don't think I primed the lifters, and even if I did, 3 years of doing nothing... Is it worth me taking them out and giving them an oil bath while compressing them?
When I change the oil I'll take the filter apart to have a good look at it
Pressure gauge is the proper version. Is up at the top, so 5-6, but haven't got it properly warmed up yet. Too chicken prarrie canoe.

Run it for a while, and then use Mobil 1 oil for your next oil change. That is thin and has a lot of detergent additives that free carbon and sludge that can stick the lifters (and sometimes piston rings). It may take a while, but if stuck lifters are your problem it will eventually resolve itself.
