I've made my mind up. First though. Thank you all very much for your time here and suggestions. I've read them all and taken a lot of care over my choice. I will not bore you with the details but my decision is to try a set of 4 .... Yokohama Advan Fleva V701 tyres at 205/50x15" In a few weeks I shall report back and let you know if this was a good or bad choice for me. 95% of my driving is now on the road and not on the track any longer. I have become totally disenchanted with "Track-Days" and only now go to see my chums. TD's are now mainly cars on trailers with slick tyres, people sneaking in a shake down or utter test day for their race cars or clowns in Lotus 7 style cars that don't understand that the car in front has to yield to allow the overtake and it's on the straight part of the track ONLY! So rather than raise my blood pressure after some 48 years of competitive driving I shall just not take part. Happy days. Regards. Rich. Let us know how you get on, ahh shame you've been put off, you should at least come to the annual Llandow 5fest track day it was such a relaxed event with no drama/ego to deal with Heres an idea of what Advan V701 205/50 look like on a 15x8J...

Hello batou. Your right! I will come to the meet next year.
Thank you for all the pictures you've posted they have been a great help to me. As I've got older, er, now very old. My hearing has become very damaged. It's now at a point where what I can hear, pardon! Has become very strange on how it makes me feel. The tyre noise on my MX-5., Maserati Granturismo and other cars is driving me nuts. To the point I don't want to drive. So drastic changes are needed. Hence my tyre choice.
Regards. Rich.

No problem, I've been planning ahead for tyre choice myself and its really annoying that tyre manufactures don't actually tell you accurate dimensions, especially considering some of these are high end/niche tyres and not your regular ecopleb version so I've found pictures of them mounted far more useful. I have quite the collection now . Ahh sorry to here that, when I was at Llandow there was a chap younger than me (I turn 40 this month) and I didn't notice until he pointed it he was wearing a modern hearing aid and talked about it a bit, tech has come on a hell of a long way and looks like you can tune out certain frequencies (wonder if it helps you tune out certain people lolol) that might be worth looking into for at least driving to help you enjoy the cars again. I certainly will be looking at that route when I need to (lots of hours stood infront of guitar amps and PA systems in my youth haha). I can certainly relate, the Bridgestone runflats on the Subaru were unbareably loud, I hate binning something thats still serviceable most of the time but I had to bin them. They were driving me up the wall.

Different sets of wheels for different purposes. Also, i have some sony xm3 or something like it. Noise cancelling headphones.
They're really nice when driving. Cancels out a lot of droning, lets important sounds through.

R888Rs are very noisy- don’t think the Db value on the sticker is very accurate. Have now switched to Yoko A052 - they’re a better tyre the dry & amazing in the wet. I was 3rd quickest outright at a wet Goodwood earlier this year- only got beaten by 1 single seater & a 4x4 Sierra. Oh & they’re quiet.😁 205/50R15 Good to hear A052 are doing the business, they are going on mine, just haven't decided on the size yet, previously ran 235 1B and 245 road, the only option for these is 225 or 255, I can make both work and generally subscribe to the bigger is better but 255 in a 1B is going to be chunky......seems OTT. Not sure I can support them properly without a 10" wheel.

For me, the bigger tyre sizes over 195 or 205 come with more rubber and hence more weight that its more of my concern on an NA. There becomes a point where what you gain in grip you lose in feel/agility. I think its safe to say that at a 10J rim with a 255 would be over that point lol . I caved in and ordered the Nankang NS2Rs in 195/50 R15, I got a too good a deal to pass up, £220 for 4 brand new (demon tweeks on ebay with 20% code PURCHASE4LESS if anyone is interested). I can live with the noise for a season I think, if its really that bad then I'll consider swapping them after they are done. It might be some time until I get the new wheels fitted and drive the car but will report my findings when I do. The A052s were £160 to £170 each, and in all honesty real overkill for an NA 1.6... For those interested the section width of the NS2R measured is 201mm so 7.9 inches. Should have no issues fitting this to an 8J and minimal sidewall pull, just enough to eliminate any sidewall roll. They also weight 8.6kg each. Nankang NS2R 195/50 R15 - Section Width by batousan, on Flickr

They hum/whirr at higher speed, like the diff is about to explode or something but they do offer amazing levels of grip, so I think you'll like them

Not as square shouldered as a AD08R in my view, the central flat tread patch on the top of the tyre is 182mm from there it curves to the main sidewall so around 10mm of curved shoulders if that makes sense. I'll be able to give you a better idea when I have them mounted.

Yup when I moved from 16 to 17" and wide 1B I added almost 5kg per wheel/tyre which is a lot but took a few records and championships with the switch so I would say job done, but I would also say there were some instances where due to sprinting the wide tyre just gave me cold tyres and a lot of hard work to stay on the road leading to a driving style where I would be sliding it to scrub and heat, so thinking swaying towards narrower 225 to see how it feels.
Have you weighed the NS2R as Specs would suggest it is a heavy tyre a couple of kg heavier than a052 in your size?

NS2R actual weight 8.6kg each in 195/50 R15 A052 manufacturer quoted weight 7.8kg each in 195/50 R15. Considering A052s are £115 more expensive per tyre, I'll take a a hit on that. 0.8kg per tyre is considerable unsprung weight but the wheels are lighter than most 15x8.0Js so that will make up the difference.

Does sound like the A052 is amazing tho. Most 'performance track' are by default close to 9KG in that spec. Also thanks for that insight re : going large to win sandys

Also thanks for that insight re : going large to win sandys The OG AD08R compound was 7.9kg per tyre in that size, and an absolute bargin price tyre, not sure what the new cucked EU spec RS compound is though, not that it matters.

I did a couple of different disciplines and there is obviously a balance more clever people probably understand, I just slap 'em on and drive it, live with the issues until next set if I am wrong on the Solo side, lots of rubber and camber is ideal, on the sprint side less so, particularly on fast tracks, more drag, longer heat up times etc, on the whole wide felt good for me, it is not for everyone, some of the sprints and hills are small and tight like solos though, so wide can work there.
