Hi,
I have an ally screen washer tank on my mx5, admittedly I only use water as washer fluid but over time it gets contaminated with corrosion really bad - after a while it pretty much looks like milk and makes such a mess when it gets squirted over windscreen & body work etc. (even if this is only at mot time!) and sometimes it creates “gunk” that blocks the washer jets.
Has anyone else had this problem and is there any solution to it, is there any washer fluid that won’t corrode / react with aluminium ?
I was wondering about using deionised water would that still corrode / react with aluminium?
Thanks for any help!
Tim

I think ally screen washers bottles are prarrie canoee. The coolant overflow bottle is the only thing you can get away with for ali but that's also prarrie canoee.
Because screenwash isn't made like coolant is. Coolant is formulated to _NOT_ corrode aluminium and iron.
Screenwash isn't designed with anything like that in mind. It's some mix of soap, water and anti-freeze but has far less regulation and quality control than a coolant so good luck....
Bare in mind I know of no OEM produces ali washer or coolant reservoirs.
Options I can think of...
1) since the ali is already corroding I don't think deionized water is going to help you. it's already well etched and reacting. clean it out very very thoroughly (I mean with water and then ethanol and then brake cleaner and then... let it dry) and then spray a laquer inside and hope it all gets coated inside and then put it in the oven to let the laquer harden.... and then put it back to use.
2) switch to a plastic one like a normal human being, the oem one is _fine_ and if you keep it relatively full it won't melt, but you can wrap it in heat reflective tape if you are a forgetful soul, but that means you can't see how much is left... SO JUST KEEP IT FULL ?.
3) go cappuccino washer bottle if you have to have it in the scuttle like some of us idiots (yours truly included).

Thanks for the replies. OEM is no good, I had to relocate due to the SC inlet pipe work and the “Fast5” ally tank fitted in the skuttle seemed to suit the bill perfectly - I obviously did not consider the corrosion issue!. I may give the idea of sealing the tank a go (I wonder if it’s possible to insert some sort of bladder) otherwise I guess it’s going to be a cappuccino tank, shame though as the ally tank helps bling the engine bay

I’ve got a cheap bladder type washer tank with a built in pump. Cheap & not blingy but works fine🙂

When you're old enough you also get the option to carry one of those around with you all over the place

Unless you've got a good way to spray it inside evenly I'd use a non-aerosol laquer and mix it down...
Probably do 1:2 thinners:laquer
just put it in and shake it about, poor it out, let it dry hard then repeat.
lot of work to maintain that bling lol

lot of work to maintain that bling lol Indeed - probably not worth it. I will look out for a cappucino tank.

How much does your original tank foul the supercharger inlet? mine did, but a hairdryer softened the plastic enough to create clearance.

Wasn't aware this was a thing, looks like I fluked it going for the Cappuccino bottle.
Ali tanks seems to sell pretty quick on Facebook if you go down that route.
