My turbo coolant pipes let go a couple of weeks ago (perished rubber, leaked a bit but not a massive deluge).
On the run where i discovered it, I was getting a squealing pig noise on boost.
I assumed it was related.
I have no replaced the hoses, but am still getting the same noise, on boost:
On reading up, there was a suggestion of belt squeal from coolant, but pretty sure it's not that.
It could also be gasket on turbo or manifold, but i really can’t be rear canoed to take it all to pieces unless one of you tells me it is definitely that...
If it’s boost related, have you checked all the pipe work from the compressor to IC & through to the inlet manifold?
no... but i know that's what i have to do.
I was hoping it was related to the water pipe leak becuase they happened at exactly the same time. but gven that pipework is all as old as the water pipes... i will need to go over it all as you say.
rediculous as it sounds, the turbo can leak on the pressure side (between core & compressor-housing theres usually an 'O' ring) and even the wastegate actuator
1.6L engine & mk1 inlet manifold? theres a rubber seal between the icv's 'thermo-valve' (on side of manifold by injectors) and of course the throttlebody to manifold gasket / icv, injectors, inlet manifold to head........

What are the hive mind thoughts?
Sounds like a happy pig to be honest, tortured ones sound far worse and terrifying/horrific to hear to say the least. Sounds more like someone stuck an Eaton M45 in there when you were not looking.

been through the intercoller piping and checked/tightened everything
reaplced all the vacuum hoses (I found one tube that was on its last legs so i hoped that was it, but still making the noise. and not in a a good Bad Obsession Motorsports way...)
The noise not only doesn't go away, but is exactly the same. I don't think i have touched anything that makes the noise - if i'd tightened a leaking boost hose, i'd expect the noise to stop or at least change...
My next thought was fuel pressure regulator, as that's the only other thing inline... Could that be Canoeered and making a noise? Is there any (safe) way to bypass that from the vacuum? I would just buy another one to test it but they are $145 ffs...
The only other thing is the boost guage in the ECU.
When you replaced your vac hoses did you also do the one for the brake booster ? that's got a OWV in it that can fail. It's meant to be directional towards the motor. Just try cap it off and drive without boosted brakes. If that's the source of your noise.. :-)

Ooh. Will try that...
nope - not that.
i guess next check is the blow off vavle give it a clean...

queenie: Hiya fellas and fellettes. My name is Gary, I am 72, live in rural Victoria (Australia), am an unashamed Anglophile and own a gold 1998 NB. I bought her in 2016, reflecting at the time that I had wanted a car like this since age 15. Yep, took me 50 years!

Simon: Nice and quiet in here, but I'm back with vengance! Car with a knackered crank is now having a full rust and engine resto at Basset Down! Will be spenny, but excited to have a 'good' car again.
