Erm I don't know. I haven't touched it!
Went for a celebratory drive. Broke down. Drivetrain has gone somewhere, can't see anything visibly broken so guessing either the diff or gearbox has canoed itself. Joy.

It's the diff, crown wheel and pinion are prime suspects. After waiting 5 hours I finally got picked up at 8am. All the fun. Anyone got a 4.1 Torsen?

Today has been a busy day but feeling like I've got a lot done. This morning, after a bit of a slow start, ever dependable dad came over. Together we reclaimed the garage! After setting up the baby room and buying lots of stuff for our imminent arrival, the mountain of cardboard had rather taken over. Off to the tip with that lot! It's now beautifully empty and awaiting a mobile automobile. My audio friend came over and dropped off my speakers and tweeters too: While he was here he relieved me of a load of old mdf too, more space in the garage for me! Someone came over to take some old furniture away, and wifey and I also cleared under the stairs and the spare room upstairs, very cathartic throwing stuff away. In between all that I managed to get some time on the car to look at the broken diff. I popped the rear up on axle stands and crawled underneath to scope it out. Diff removal looks like quite a job! I didn't have long outside but thought I'd get cracking with some easy bits (ha!) first. After spraying everything with 3in1 oil, I showed the chassis bracing the breaker bar. The bolts all came quietly apart from one, which, although no match for the breaker bar in the end, put up a hell of a fight! Within half an hour this rusty collection of metal was on the garage floor. As I still had a bit of time I thought I'd also have a crack at the exhaust. I gave up after getting one nut half off, more oil required as it was just too much for me! I'm a little worried about how difficult getting a diff out and in is going to be, it's quite involved and so much more complicated than other cars I've worked on! I'm sure there's a reason for doing it the way Mazda did, but damned if I know...

Had the gfs mechanic bro come over yesterday to help with that stuck ppf bolt... He decided removing the diff would be a good way to do so... All those bolts are rusty too good luck!

I swapped the diff on mine after work one day. I got home at 2am.
The PPF bolts are by far the worst. Well actually no, not the PPF bolts, because they came out pretty easily. The stupid little collar that holds the PPF bolt in is the worse.
You can get away with just undoing the the two PPF bolts, the two diff -> subframe mounts and the two top bolts on the wishbones (and obviously the shafts). No need to remove the whole PPF like the Haynes manual says - I got away with securing it out of the way with some cable ties and getting the diff out around it.

Well the car still sits broken in the parking space... Today, having picked up a cordless impact wrench, I decided to have another crack at getting the diff out. I figured other people do it on their drive, so can I. Well I fell at the first hurdle. An exhaust nut rounded off and the others wouldn't budge, angle grinder required I think Called it a day on that, looked at the door cards and installing my new crazy heavy speakers. The boom mat was trimmed to fit but the speaker is slightly too large for the hole - I have a plan to remedy that though which involves mdf I have flashing tape for the outer door skin too. All in all I basically did nothing except remove the battery, which has gone flat ish and needs reconditioning. Seriously lost the love today, no cash and little enthusiasm makes MX5 ownership hard work.

While I gather the enthusiasm for stumping up the cash to get the diff fixed, I thought I'd take a look at what I need to get my audio setup finished. The speakers I have, have very chunky magnets. The minimum diameter hole required to clear the cage is 144mm, whereas the holes in the door are about 140mm. Therefore it's not a straight forward fit and forget. Rather than chop the doors up to make it fit, I've ordered some 22mm mdf spacers to fit between the door and door cards. The idea then will be to fit the speakers and grills straight to the door card, and should be a nice snug and solid mounting and eliminate door cards from the list of potential rattles. I have new door cards which I'll cover in vinyl, which will give me a nice clean and flat door card. The tweeters will be another challenge... Another little project on the go has been something I spoke to the Daves at DaveFab about. I saw a nifty rear jacking point by a guy in the US, but after emailing and FB messaging and receiving no response, and seeing the Daves joining Mighty5s, I dropped the Daves a note to see if they could do something similar. A few short days later and they'd come up with an idea with extra triangulation, bracing and weighing less than 2kg. A prototype will be coming very soon
