Oh and i'd forgot to post the other week, a month or so ago I got one of the gearknobs hand-made from recycled skateboards, very cool, so gave it a trial fit like a child with a toy at Christmas! It's not on the car at the mo as I still prefer the shape of my Jass Performance 'Type-R' gearknob but this is very well made indeed and will be a nice alternative for the whole 10 seconds it takes to change them over.....

Looks good, sorta unique as there'll not be another exact combination of colours like it got an airrifle with a laminate stock Rich.

Got the first cylinders retainers collets/keepers in. I'd say an hour long job for four valves. Technique I've ended up is 'compress, put the collet in carefully, so the inside is up against the valve, release carefully' - it works, but it isn't particularly fun. 85% of the time the collets slip or fall the wrong way.

I swapped the wheels back over from the 55 profile Rainsport 5s to the 50 profile T1Rs, in preparation for a sprint at Lydden Hill this Saturday. Also assessed the aftermath of the MCC long distance trial I did at the end of June - rolled front arches still looking good, rust hole in the front nearside wing has got a bit bigger, and the luggage rack with two wheels on it has scraped some of the paint off the boot lid, despite me wedging some roofing felt between the rack and the boot before tightening it up. Oh well.

Put some grease on your collets, keeps them in position as you release your spring compressor.

Put some grease on your collets, keeps them in position as you release your spring compressor. it's helped. I'm getting faster with this method. they have a strong tendency to fall out because they're top heavy and the valves are at an angle, so at least one collet tends to slip to the 'down' side and flopsy. god knows what it's like doing this job on a boxer in situ. one cylinder left to do. packing it in for the evening.

Bought a Stack boost gauge off Ebay, it's in Bar not psi, I think that's why it hadn't sold yet.
Now to get a coolant temp gauge sorted.

I find getting in and out of the Rs Ltd a lot easier than my 1934 Austin EB65 sports with suicide doors ( I have had had 40 years of practice though ) Its only been my car for the last 30 years !!!
I had to open the bonnet of the Rs when I got to work this morning. It had steam escaping !! It is down to the thermostat going porus there is a tiny pinhole in the top of it. So its out with the self amalgamating tape to do a classic bodge. I have a brand new one destined for my next engine build so I will see how long the tape works for. I suspect it will last for several years though.

I finished the valve stem seal job and putting in the new valve train hardware... http://instagr.am/p/CRWnxyynl9D Despite the rear cylinder being the by far the most awkward, I was getting quite fast at putting collets in, 15 minutes to remove all the bits and get it ready, 30 minutes to install the new collets. I recommend using fine tipped tweezers and a fine tip pick which is ever so slightly magnetic, not a magnetic screwdriver, and strong magnetic job is for when you bugger up and need to recover the collets. And nice tacky grease :-) FYI, I didn't lose a single collet. I still have the four spares.
