I've ordered a new clutch kit (pressure plate, friction plate and release bearing) and started to take the gearbox off again last night. It was a lot quicker this time, partly because I knew what needed doing, partly because the stuck bolts were not stuck, and partly because of my new favourite tool:
It's utterly brilliant - the two top bolts on the bellhousing that are down the back of the engine, right by the bulkhead, are a nightmare to get to with a spanner or ratchet, but with this sideways extension thing you just slide it down onto the bolt head and keep your ratchet handle out of the engine bay, and crank it with no obstructions. Worked well on some of the starter motor bolts too.
Took off the exhaust, prop shaft, PPF front bolts and electrical connections as well, so after one 2-hour session I've just got the bottom two bellhousing bolts to remove and it'll be off again.

Looks small and fat, Fiat 500? it's 344mm apparently and pretty much the size of my prototipo but with a chonker grip and a slight dish increased because of the pcd adaptor.

Today's clutch news: got the gearbox off again last night, and remembered to take some pictures this time. Here's the one that didn't work (old pressure plate, new OEM friction plate): The clutch fork doesn't appear to be damaged but it does go down at the end, is it supposed to be straight all the way along? New clutch kit (pressure and friction plate) fitted. The torque spec for the bolts seems very low (22 Nm) but I went with it anyway. (And yes I realise there are no bolts in the photo!) Hopefully will get it back together in my next session and see if it has fixed the problem...

So the leak in my drivers footwell on the white car. It doesn't look like coolant anymore. It looks like clutch fluid. It was definitely coolant once upon a time and/or a mix of coolant and something, I now feel that something that is now dripping is the clutch fluid.
Twice now the clutch MC has bled down.
Ordered new bits via BOFI for that including a direct line to go between slave and master, for both cars, because come on mazda.
BOFI's EURO shipping via NL is actually quite cheap, efficient and painless now. Thank G.

I put the battery back in it and drove round to the wheel refurbishers to swap the wheels over Tried out these rather than paint the red rim on this time And left the original wheels for them to work their magic on.

(i have a 55 plate 1.8 NC) edit: how do i put photos in? it’s probably the least unique car on this forum but im young and cant afford to insure a modded one😂

Modding can come in time - the good thing about 5s is that there are a world of options that can be done incrementally

My brake MC used to leak from the two grommets that the reservoir fitted into, annoying leak, but easily missed, and thankfully easily fixed.

Have only driven the turbo a handful of times since I got it back, it's either rained, snowed or been salted to the hilt up here. The wife is also worrying about how safe a 1993 mx5 with a turbo is strapped to it is, saying is there something a bit safer available. Been hypothetically wondering what I would replace it with should I change. I've got a 350Z itch I've never scratched, other than that I've no idea, everything better or on par with the 5 is 4 times the price entry.

Try wait till summer.... the 350Z is.. heavy.. and absolutely crap on fuel economy.

As Atlex said ….. But he meant to say …..
The 350Z is utterly disappointing. It’s F-heavy, underpowered in standard form drinks fuel. The suspension is bloody awful and ‘crashy’. The ride is simply appalling. It’s looks are now rather awful. The 370Z most disappointingly is not a lot better. Oh yes …. And inside it’s amazingly noisy.
But, it’s your choice of course.
Regards. Rich.
Ps. I really must get off the fence with my car reviews.

Other 'fun car' options when I got mine were Clio 172/182 type thing, Civic Type R, Smart roadster. In the same price bracket you're not going to have as much fun, and nothing you get will be much safer until you hit cars from the 2010s really. Maybe an Impreza? Still some around for <£3K though you'd have to tread carefully...and she might think it's too ASBO anyway!

IMO with a half-decent exhaust the turbo will be quiet anyway. Just put decent tyres on it ?
