...who drives a patchwork cut 'n' shut mk1 with red and beige panels...
Cheer up! Your life isn't so bad, surely?!!
I gave this guy a thumbs up when I was out driving and he just scowled and steamed towards me like some some sort of brain dead aggressive chav.
Anyone else got tales of poor MX5 drivers with attitude?

most NCers and a fair few NDers too. I don't think they even know what car I'm driving, or what car they're driving, for that matter.
usually people and especially kids love seeing a nice mx5 with a fruity sound.
Once this year an NCers waved. Once.

I must admit I have put NC owned on my ignore list as they never seem very happy or seem to acknowledge anything around them. I suspect most of their owners just wanted a car with a drop top and a new/ish number plate. I think the same applies to ND owners even more so. Especially the housewives who moved out of an SLK for the next must have accessory. A bit sweeping I know, but that is my impression so far!
But you'd think all mk1 owners would be happy enthusiasts.

I was in London the other week and I actually had to tell a couple of young chaps (early 20s or so) on delivery bicycles what it was! They thought it was cool, though, and as one of the chaps said, 'it's a classic car' I guess that's a side effect of the stupid congestion / emissions zone and will be even worse with the new air quality management zone that Khan is bringing in (inside the A604 ring road! WTF!!) - no-one will run anything 'classic' because it'll cost over 20-bloody-quid a day just to drive it around... grrrr.

Mk1s are technically classic cars now as many are over 25 years old. That makes them even cooler in my eyes.

I discovered another 5 in my road the other day, a mk2. They've never said anything about being a fellow 5 owner There's a mk3 owner a few doors down too I'm friendly with, we always have a good chat about cars, and he helped me out with my MoT issue too. They aren't all bad but not everyone can be as enthusiastic as us!

Always amazes me that people are upset other MX5 owners don't wave back, the vast majority of MX5s I see just look to be driven by normal non-car folk who probably wonder why someone is waving at them - even if they have the same car. Hell, I never used to wave at other MX5s unless they were modified/waved at me first.

I understand your view perfectly. Unmodded MX5s just seem like any other car drivers - oblivious to much around them. Which is fair enough. But when you see a highly modded mk1, slammed with a noisy exhaust you'd assume the driver was an enthusiast. I guess everyone is different and not everyone is a happy bunny!

I see a lot of middle aged women in 5's near me, I don't wave - they'd just think I was a perv or a nut job

I stopped waving ... MX5 owners just dont wave back ever. Maybe thats why theres an impression that NC owners are not in it for the fun Lotus and Mini lot always waved back ...

I may try a casual flick up of my low pro lights next time I see a mk1.

To be honest, it usually takes me so long to assess whether the oncoming car is an "enthusiast" that by the time I have decided that it is cool to give them a wave/popup it's too Canoeing late anyway.
I posted up a question regarding this on the other forum, but does anyone remember there was a guy called "Binarypunk" who made a electronic mod that let you wink one popup light with a double pull of the highbeam stalk, I think it was sold on Autolink's site for a while? Anybody know what happened to this? His Youtube video demonstrating it also seems to have disappeared.
Pretty cool trick to pull off when spotting another like minded individual.
