Forgive my ignorance, but isn't the whole point of the hole this side of the brake disc for threading a bolt through and freeing the disc from the hub? Nope. I thought it was but apparently it's for adjusting the handbrake mechanism which is a drum brake inside the disc. Quite neat actually!

They are brilliant if a little thirsty... Probably not a lot more than my X type 2.5 And a lot quickerπ I can just about manage 400 miles to a tank driving like someone with 9 points on their licence. Which is about 23mpg π± on premium π±π±π± But 0-60 is about 6 seconds so its swift enough. Next month I'll be getting a remap for moar powaaaas too

Car was running a bit out of sorts and we are off to France in a few hours! So I park strategically under a street lamp and get my head under the bonnet. Remember the R35 BOV vacuum pipe being a bit close to the crossmember? Well it had caused the hose to think. Quick reversal back to standard in the dark (only dropped one socket!) and hopefully all will be well again. Back to the drawing board on that one... it's a better BOV and I'm sure with a bit of fettling it'll fit just fine and do a sterling job. At some point I really need to replace all the vacuum hoses... some are looking super rough

Q: What does 1500 miles of bugs look like? A: Pretty mad weekend driving so far in the Stagea. Managed a mighty 25mpg overall (ish) which for a 4 up fully laden 2 tonne car tonking around the autoroutes at 130-150kph is not too bad. That's what I get normally! Here it is cooling down near the hotel in Puligny-Montrachet: Bumped in to some old 7ing buddies on the way out, they were off to a car show in Germany. My family was amazed I knew half the people in the terminal! Finished the trip with a visit to the memorial to the battle of Vimy Ridge, where my great grand father fought along side the Canadians against a well entrenched and prepared German army. Hard to imagine what they were put through but it's a beautifully maintained park and there's a section of preserved trenches where you can see just how close they were to one another. You can even visit a portion of the tunnel network. Humbling stuff and not far from Calais.

Not just any boyband 500... it's 875cc of turbocharged 2-cylinder awesomeness! When I got the Stagea I needed an automatic so my wife could also drive... well she decided that size was more important and that the Stagea was too big for her. So I got her a little car It's a manual but she's figuring it out. Now I've got some plans, but will my better half let me do them...?!

Back to the Stagea... it's been a bit quiet lately. But once the 5 is broken and out of my hair, work will begin in earnest on the 'practical' family wagon. The gauntlet has well and truly been thrown down by a family friend who has just bought an F-type - 380bhp, 4.4s to 60... so that's my goal. The standard M35 is all about restricting flow. No idea why but Nissan thought that restrictions were good. You can free up loads of power with basic flow mods. But basic is expensive when there's not a lot on the shelf. Fortunately, I was in the right place at the right time when an Aussie chap put his home made down pipe up for sale: See what I mean about restrictions? The new one is a 3" pipe, the old one is barely half that straight after the turbo. And people wonder why turbos on these cars die... All I have to do now is decide whether I want to high flow the turbo at the same time...

So Dweenimus is off to the powder coaters for some Spitfire loving, so he's kindly taken my dump pipe along to be ceramic coated π Bit of insomnia this evening so popped out and fitted the R35 BOV again. This time I was armed with the right size hose (ID 6mm) and two 5mm spacers to lift the brace and clear the BOV vacuum feed. I'm getting pretty quick at this now! The flutter at low boost is back. High boost is no different. It feels like it holds boost better, and the farting is gone again. It's probably too stiff a spring but the R35 doesn't run any more boost than this does... However the biggest improvement of this evening's midnight mods was the simplest thing. I've recently had a creak in the front suspension, so while I was under the bonnet I thought I'd have a poke. The top mount nuts on the LHS were loose π± nipped them up to 40Nm and ran around the other side and checked those too - not so loose but not to spec either. Creaking eliminated and the front end feels amazing. When I get a chance I think I'll do a full suspension spanner check...

I had another go at getting OBDII diagnostics to work. I'd read that the VGate worked with HobDrive, so I splurged on the full version (Β£20.49!!!) and plugged it all in... Nada. Doesn't see the car. No readings. Useless. It's got to be the settings, so I've asked the guys who managed it before what they think. Fingers crossed. In better news, the down pipe is now ceramic coated, I'm talking to Forge about getting a nice BOV made up (I think the R35 one is too stiff), and I bought some silicone hoses (for a 350Z but they are apparently the same - someone was breaking their Z so I snapped these up cheap!). Next up on the purchase list - an ECU reflash, Mishimoto intercooler and a Megan Racing strut brace. Then I need to get to fitting everything!

good call on Forge BOV. They are among the best. So interestingly they donβt do an R35 BOV as they could never get them to work as well as stock. A guy there is looking to get me one made up especially, which would be nice

Exciting update - Forge are able to make me a custom BOV out of stock from an R35 atmospheric BOV base and one of their other recirc models, with the vac take off pointing the right way. They also gave me a great price on an Intake Pressure Compensation Valve (which allows you to use a softer spring, giving stiff spring performance on boost and soft spring responsiveness). Please buy my stuff pronto so I can pay for all this good stuff π
