Not a done deal, they're "consulting" on it. Would still need to go through EU parliament. Due to the rubbish deal 'negotiated' by UK government, we'll have to abide by it if it becomes EU law. Of course, now we have left the EU, we have no say in this. Sovereignty, eh? Funny that this story seems to originate from the boss of Euro Car Parts. In fact, the same story is carried by lots of news sites, repeated word for word, even using the same photo of an independent garage (in case we don't know what a garage looks like). It's basically a press release by ECP, repeated as news.

... My water company decided to install a 'smart meter' without asking or telling me. It's okay - it's so they can 'better monitor any leaks that occur' (I smell something funny...) They do that by sending a meter reading once... per hour. WTF? At least the water company can't remotely turn your water supply off if there's a dispute, so I'm not so worried about their fitting smart meters if they want. I'm avoiding getting a smart meter for gas or electricity, especially after hearing someone who got a job with a smart meter maker a few years ago thinking it would be cool to help the environment against wasted energy but got totally disillusioned when he realised it was all about helping the utility companies against people who can't pay their bills.

Can they not? I thought they could, but I guess depriving people of the one thing they very definitely need to live isn't seen as very sporting... haha +1 on the power meters thing, though. I once read a Government document that had a line about 'managing demand' or similar - which was basically code for 'brownouts if we want to stop people using power in the future when we've closed all the fossil fuel power stations and stopped people burning wood/coal/oil or running an ICE car' lol I wish I could find it now but it is lost to the mists of time! Yet people lap up the ol' smart meters and flashy 'usage monitors' so they can see how many watts their fridge is using, with no thought for the long term consequences! [/cynic]

Not really a video but an observation I wanted to share on soldering.
I have some electrical projects I need to do and I decided to buy a decent electric soldering iron (70W Ersa - massive overkill) having used a gas one for maybe the last 15 years (a bernzomatic).
This old bernzomatic gas torch always took yonks to get up to heat but has been a good cordless job for a while but on some joints it would just never put out enough heat to make a 'quality' solder joint. I should probably have run something like map gas in it instead of butane but there you go. Sitting there trying to heatsoak a larger than usual bit of wire or whatever, nothing would flow like I wanted despite me taking precautions, cleaning joints etc.
Needless to say with this new iron the quality of my joints just went through the roof. 15 second heat time or less. bang.
Never going back unless it's in a pickle.

I remember when you could pick one up for around £500 but good luck finding one for less than £2k now, still rusty too
