Tell me about it. In the 10 years I did it I saw 2 apprentices come through the workshops and onto conventional machines, but more than 5 guys retire. Shame the money isn't there really, get paid more as a plumber than a machinist.

My dream job was always to be a pilot, I didn't want to fly for the military so after uni I tried to join some sort of airline programme, but I found all of those "free" pilot training programmes had ended, and anyone wanting to become a commercial pilot needed a spare 100k in their back pocket, or parents willing to re-mortgage their home.
I applied for many of the part and fully funded programmes but I'd always make it to the final interviews and no further, they were so hotly contested. Thousands of people applying for just 4 or 5 places. I was reluctant to take one of those chunky personal development loans on offer because there were so many people I'd met who all had an fATPL and were working temp jobs just hoping to get a job with an airline at some point. People declaring themselves bankrupt, Ryanair pilots I'd met earning under 20k, working when they were sick because they were worried about not getting enough shifts to pay the rent and the loan repayments... it all just put me off in the end. I'd still love to be a pilot, I started doing my PPL but money was tight, and it's hard to do anything else when you're paying £170/hour for PPL lessons. After a while I realised doing trackdays with my friends were actually more rewarding than flying for an hour at a time by myself. I keep telling myself that one day if I'll just take a 2 month sabbatical and go to South Africa, Spain, or the USA, and get my PPL in one hit, rather than once a month and only if the weather's just right, but you need a spare £6-7k and I don't think I'll just have that lying around!
These days I don't really have a dream job or major aspirations... just work my way up the ladder hopefully, head of Customer Insights then Chief Data Officer would be ideal.

i have thought about this and whatever I come up with I just decide that even your favourite pastime becomes a chore if you HAVE to do it day in and day out! ^^ This. I spent years trying to get into the music industry (as a commercial composer - adverts, TV themes, songwriting, etc.). Finally started getting some decent commission work and then realised that it completely ruined the magic of creating music for me. Instead of just writing the stuff I wanted to, I was constantly having to ruin my work just to try and make 'the client' happy. And of course it all had to be done by tomorrow so I was working hectic hours just to get things finished. I often hated the finished product, but as long as I got my money I had to accept it as being done and move on. That was really hard. I hear the same story from other people in creative roles - graphic design, copywriting, illustration etc. Creativity should be a personal journey between you and your work, but when you're doing it commercially it is more a case of your creativity being exploited for someone else's gain. So, to answer your original question? If you'd asked me 10 years ago it would have been to be earning a living making music. Now, my aim is to have a job with as little stress as possible, so that I can enjoy my life, and do the things I love in my free time. It's about the journey, not the destination. Only just read this and it sums up me feelings perfect. I've just graduated from one of the highest rated music schools in the world, and I've just been offered an in-house job as an engineer, but I'm reluctant to take it because Uni sucked my love for music out of me big time. I'm looking for anything now that will pay the bills and give me enough money to do whatever stupid projects and stuff I want to do with my life.....

BAME is totally under-represented in motoring journalism.
I mean, sure Chris Harris is brown and that new guy on Top Gear, Rory, is black but they have totally English names. We need real forrrins.

I really want to work in a bodyshop, (he says after rattle canning his whole car poorly in 45mins). I love the idea of completely changing the way a car looks just by it's colour. Seeing interesting cars come and go. For me it would be close enough to working with something I love but also far enough away from ruining it as a hobby as it's only one part of it. I don't even know how you'd get into something like that, I guess college and becoming an apprentice. I guess 30 is too old to be an apprentice

I guess 30 is too old to be an apprentice Not at all you can get funding if you haven't used your 'free education allocation' basically if you haven't been to college or uni you can get funding for apprenticeships it's finding the work placement and college that always causes the issues

I went to college when I was 16 but never went to uni, wonder if it's something worth looking into? Yeah I think my local college moved their automotive stuff away to another campus which is annoying. Thanks for the input! I figured I was doomed to sales for the rest of my life!

I'd definitely like them well trained. Plus there is no vertical drop with a bus unless the driver puts it through a railing. My point is very cheeky and takes the piss out of pilots but it is really more an industrial comment - increasingly the image given the dominance of low-cost carriers - the prestige has been sucked out over the decades. I'm unsure what there is left. The novelty of overseas trips has been lost.
