I also found it harder to get in and out of than the MK1, the main reason I changed…. I was a little confused with the mr2 purchase, not a car I've found easy to access / escape from as to rot on mk2's & mk3's, this can be fixed and then you'd have 'the devil you know' as to rot, it's inevitable Rich.

Finished a bit of tidying up last night - new flange nut to hold the alternator pivot bolt on turned up, so hopefully that's the end of the alternator woes in time for the sprint at Lydden on Saturday.
Also a new front passenger wing arrived from MX5parts, in a huge box that weighed almost nothing. Looks good, just needs painting and then will see about fitting it, to replace the one that's a bit bent from my trip to the ditch in December and has rust holes under the plimsoll line.

Looks like I have killed the engine :-(
Drove down to Lydden Hill on Saturday, no problems at all. Did the practice run, no problems at all. Went to go out for the first timed run and it was a bit slow off the line, then lost engine power and it died. Got towed back to the paddock where we took the cam cover off and turned the engine by hand via the crank bolt, it moved but was quite hard work. The valves and cams were turning OK so seems like it must be something in the block, maybe spun a bearing? Got towed home and rolled it into the garage in shame.
Going to pick up a replacement engine tomorrow night for £200 if it looks alright; it's from a V-reg Mk2 1.6, engine code is B660 and it has the cam angle feed on the front of the cam cover, which isn't the same as mine - can I just swap my cam cover onto it? Or swap the heads over altogether?

Looks like I have killed the engine :-( saw your post on farce-book..... shame as it was going well in Llandow suppose you're gonna blame the extra ballast now Mk2 1.6, engine code is B660 and it has the cam angle feed on the front of the cam cover, which isn't the same as mine - can I just swap my cam cover onto it? Or swap the heads over altogether? should be able to remove the 'coreplug' from the rear of the head & (hopefully) insert the cas mk2 engine has 'solid' cam-followers so different profile cams compared with earlier / 115hp engines (believe swappable - cams & relavant followers) Rich.

Hopefully should be easier to swap over.

As said easy to fit the CAS to the mk2 head, you get solid lifters and better flow. You'd need the mk2 fuel rail and maybe the inlet manifold as well (I fitted one, but I can't remember if the mk1 fits or not). If you keep all your mk1 sensors, a mk2 non-vvt lump would be easy enough to fit.

Funnily enough I've recently sold a Mk2 inlet manifold that I had cleaned up and powder coated, because it wouldn't fit my Mk1 engine! Since I'm aiming for a quick return to the road I'm hoping this straight swap with an import Mk1 engine will be the best. Longer term I will probably strip down the dead engine to see what happened, and maybe build it up again with new innards, cams etc. Might even do the ITBs on that and then swap it back in, but I probably won't be able to resist putting them on the replacement first.

Been having a look into what I can make under bonnet heat-shield out of, anyone ever used something similar to THIS? Looks fairly easy to mock up and fold, but solid enough to hold it's shape.

I've used the 2 layer stuff, it's easy to form and definitely holds it's shape. Might need some structural support depending on what you've got in mind.

Yeah pretty much, initially I was going to do what everyone else does and use aluminium sheet, rubber edge it and maybe some gold tape, but this would seem to do everything and be easier to work with. Ideal thanks, I'll get some ordered up once I figure out sheet size, sure a couple of folds or a bracket or 2 should keep it in place. I'm going to try get it between the heater matrix hoses and downpipe if possible.

Still taking bits off to change the engine - last night it was the bonnet, radiator, charcoal canister (which won't be going back on), and the front ARB to make more room. Hoping to have all day in the garage next Weds to see how far I can get with the swap...
