Also.. I have bought a flatcap for driving..... I trust you will wear it backwards with flying goggles. Mine blows off if I don’t, the airflow gets underneath the peak.

I'd love to see how much a phenolic gasket helps with this, but I doubt it helps much, maybe gives you another minute or two of breathing space. running carburettors? if not then just a case of the 'Emperror's new clothes' as the high-pressure fuel will cool the inlet when sprayed through the injectors if a a phenolic gasket was so good then competition engine builders would use them? ^^ My 2p worth Rich.

Well, as I often find, something that should have been simple took far too long. Was putting the PPF long bolts back in, they have a couple of captive nuts joined together which slide along the top of the PPF so they line up with the holes. However, the front one on mine seems to have somehow got bent upwards so the nut face is not flush with the top of the PPF. I spent well over half an hour trying to get the bleddy bolt to catch in the thread, but it just won't get to the correct angle. Is there a way to get those captive nuts off so I can straighten the plate the joins them together? Hopefully without having to drop the gearbox again...

Mine bent as well, I think it's when you remove the bolts that does it, I just bought another unbent one from Autolink in the end.

Once the bolts are out it slides out, it's only held in one side I think. Might need some persuasion to come out, depends how bent it is.

Might need some persuasion to come out, depends how bent it is. On mine there are little pegs like drawing pins in the slide holes, so it doesn't come out either side. I tried punching the pegs out from underneath but they weren't budging. I took the PPF off the gearbox and pushed it to one side so I could get a better look, and it really didn't seem to be too far off straight, so I used brute force and ignorance, and got them done up eventually. Also finished doing up all the bellhousing and starter motor bolts. So, left to do are: refit prop shaft, reinstall exhaust, reattach slave cylinder, refill gearbox/turret, refit gearstick and gaiters, and probably some other stuff I've forgotten. Should be back on its wheels next time I get out to the garage...

I found a bit of data on some of the causes of hot start lean and it looks like it may be related to a) hot fuel in the rail or b) injectors being slower to open when hot. b) data www.miataturbo.net/ecus-tuning-54/injector-current-trace-shows-slower-opening-when-hot-67534/a) if your car is a returning system like an NA6 you should just let the fuel pump run a bit (10 seconds?), it'll punt fresh cool fuel through the rail, which should help reduce the injector temperatures a bit.

I have always attributed hot start problems being caused by latent heat in the intake system causing fuel evaporation. I could be wrong…

ITB Car Faffing
Played with the injection timing/angle.
Took it down the coast to a spa so the MRS can get her hot water therapy (she's into 3rd trimester now and it's our anniversary and so on and so forth..)
But back to the injection angle...
Had a good look at Haris's map and his is set to single (end) zone 420 btdc injection, but that seems a bit silly to me. And I've got overlappy cams so I thought to play with it...
You can have a table rather than just a number so I've settled on low TPS/Idle zone 320 BTDC injection, which is several degrees after the exhaust cam closes.
This should mean less fuely-smelling cold start/idle and also stabler idle. and I've seen that already in my log.
And for the rest of the map it's up to 380 BTDC which means we get a little bit valve cooling effect.
The default was 360 BTDC.
