went to a friend's house in the dark, scrapped the whole under length of the car on the gate stop on the way out, asked (nicely) my wife to get out and wait till I drove out (nothing to do with her weight - she's skinny )

Not a 5 but spent time fixing a lower suspension arm of the wife's car, 2012 and it's rusted through and snapped, she managed to drive it home in the style of McRae! MX5 suspension arms are in better shape than these and 3 times the age: 2022-11-28_02-45-26 by Scott Reid, on Flickr Think it's the final nail in the coffin for the Corsa, we're looking into what to replace it with. I want a mk7.5 Golf R Estate (supposedly too long), she wants something high up, so shortlist is: Cupra Ateca/T-Roc/Tiguan. Open to suggestions tbh (must be future proof against 2 and 4 leg variety family additions), although it's her car so her choice at the end of the day.

My 2nd car is a SEAT Arona, only 3 cylinder, 7 speed DSG, but very frugal even when driven properly, 50+ mpg. High seating position too. Sport mode is fun, surprises others who have to change gears at the lights…

So, left to do are: refit prop shaft, reinstall exhaust, reattach slave cylinder, refill gearbox/turret, refit gearstick and gaiters, and probably some other stuff I've forgotten. Should be back on its wheels next time I get out to the garage... Nearly but not quite! Got the prop shaft in and done up, refilled the gearbox with oil (50/50 75W-90 and redline lightweight shockproof), reinstalled the exhaust, reconnected the speedo cable, checked the diff oil. Stupid thing of the night, when fitting the prop shaft I wanted to be able to turn it to get at the bolts, and I thought it was in gear, so I chucked the gearstick in the turret to get it into neutral, without having done up the gaiter etc. So of course it twanged out with all the washers and bits flying around the cabin, and the nylon cup on the bottom of the gearstick was nowhere to be found. I searched on/around/under both seats, under the edge of the carpets, on the dashboard, on the garage floor, and eventually found it hidden in the turret oil. What a plonker. So, just refilling the turret, fitting the gearstick, gaiters and centre console, and reattaching the slave cylinder to go. Then hopefully I can take the bloody thing for a test drive!

Corsa’s are absolute rotters. My step sister has had a few which seem to be almost worn out or rotten by the time they’re 10 years old. My f-I-L had a mk7 R estate & loved it, not much longer than a golf but the boot isn’t massive either. My 330Xd touring fits 3 labs, 5ish secs to 60 & 45mpg if that helps. It’s now 6 years old & still feels like it’s barely run in, I plan to keep it for a long time.👍🏻

You could buy a very nice car for that much… I'd be curious what was involved in a 'refresh' for ~£6000 Rich. He's used to doing Nissan GTR's so guess whilst he's doing a 5 he could be making more on a GTR. Having said that I think it was a full rebuild with new everything.
Sorry Bogissimo didn't read your post until the auction had expired but thanks for the thought.

No bother, wasn't my sale! FWIW I picked up a replacement used 1.6 engine for my car for ~£250, and I've spent another £50-odd on replacement belts and oil etc. If you've got the space/time/tools it's worth considering doing it yourself - tricky at times but none of it is rocket science, and there's plenty of help around on t'internet

Although Arnold Clark wanted twice the cars value to resolve all the corrosion. Supposedly this wasn't structurally critical! Yeah had considered one but again too long for what she's after and trying to stay away from diesel. I know a quick mid size suv isn't mucho petrol head but its a compromise tbh. Jimny too small and electric are way out of budget! Cars so expensive at the minute, honestly part of why the mazda probably won't be going anywhere anytime soo. Who knew evos were now 20-80k, S2000 14+, type r 20k, might have missed rhe boat on a few of the coveted cars... Either that or they've moon miles now/been not well kept.

AAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Finished putting the bits back together, put it on the ground, and IT STILL WON'T GO INTO GEAR! FFS. It feels exactly as it did before I swapped the clutch plate around. The slave cylinder moves with the pedal, there's no air in the system, I just haven't got a clue what to try next

Sorry to hear that, must be really frustrating for you. So the slave cylinder acts on a pivot lever that pushes the release bearing in & out, was that working ok?

Was out giving it some late night beans on the local touge when the alt belt broke.
When the alt belt broke the fan decided to give up too, which was odd.
Only realised when I parked it up we had a boil on.
Log shows it got to nearly 130C for two minutes.
My eyes were on the charge light rather than the temp gauge !
Oddly when I turned off and on the ign after parking... the cooling fan came on again.

Boggissimo.
You may have answered this, but. How old is the clutch cover plate and what make is it.
I once changed a clutch in a V12 E-Type ….. almost set fire to myself, let alone the car. Anyhoos, the clutch cover plate was not releasing the clutch driven plate. The fingers on the cover plate where depressing but not enough. So out it all came again to have a new cover plate. That resolved the problem.
Regards. Rich.
