To veer off the current topic... Is that a snap-off steering wheel setup I see before me? What is it / how do you find it (is there any play) / do you have the collapsable back part / etc. ?? It's a PITA getting in and out in winter when dressed up like a multi-layer fetishist so I'm thinking that not having a wheel to try to squeeze under could be very useful... Other than that, I'm afraid I've not kept up to speed with the thread but top work on the engine fiddling! NRG Slim QR with the original spec MOMO crushable hub. It brings the wheel about an inch closer to the driver, so not extreme like some QRs. The crushable hub is critical to your survival in a crash, as you probably may be aware. The two contacts you see are for the horn. But it's possible to earth the horn through the body of the QR and Hub. the NRG Slim QR is a (licensed?) copy of the FET one, and it's a really good design. IMO.

IMO. Thanks very much for the info I've no idea what hub I've got on mine but it doesn't look anything like crushable, more just a solid metal cone so I think it would be a good idea to replace it... I will check out pricing of the options! I'm tempted by a deep dish wheel as I think I'm a weird shape and need to sit far enough back that my legs fit properly, but then it's too far to not have to lean forward to really lever the wheel... (removing the PAS has not helped in this regard lol) Anyway, O/T! Thanks again!

the 2nd hand momo crush hub can be found cheap enough on ebay. Those solid cone ones are sadly common but deadly.

still smoking. I'm paranoid that I've managed to not put the bloody valve stem seals on but I was quite meticulous.
7K over-run smoke. TBH, it's more smoke than could possibly past a valve stem seal.
Friend of mine who is a tuner tells me that it's certainly the oil control ring and that I should just enjoy it. He's seen the exact same condition on another B6/BP - they did the valve stem seals, it never helped.
My other thought is that it could be HG, but I'd expect to see pressure a leak in both directions. Can a HG leak oil in one direction and then seal under compression ?
Since I needed to change the oil anyway, I'm going to try some upper cylinder/piston ring soaking.. yeah I know, snakeoil, but I will try some things while that oil is going to go in the bin anyway.
I've just finished off the 4th iteration of the 'base fuel map' to get the fueling where it can be to safely drive the car until I put the 'real' ecu in :-)

Check your breather set up has no blockages

If your piston rings are stuck in, soak your bores overnight with redex (or equivalent) spin the engine before replacing plugs to expel redex residue, then run it, be prepared for lots and lots of smoke, but it will free off your rings.

I've done a soak with ATF & acetone after I brought the car in hot, with a bit of cloth-over-sparkplug-hole starter action to get it going, left it for a few hours then came back and put in.. yes ! REDEX. :-) I put the plugs back in and started turning it by hand to put some pressure in the combustion chamber so as to push the injector cleaner into the ring area. With the cleaner in there it's even harder to turn over than usual. It's increasing compression that's for sure. A potential sign that it might not be my valve seals. I understand I should actually do this a few times not just once since it can take a while to break down what is gumming it up, if that's actually what is wrong. I've got the car turned so that the smoke machine will go to the centre of the courtyard. :-) I'll put some fresh NGKs in once I've changed the oil.

It’s not the direction the car points that matters, watch out for wind direction….

Valve stem oil seals, 6 minutes into video….

Changed the oil out, ran it, mild smokescreen.
Good news is that what I did has reduced the smoke significantly. It's still there however.
I'm confident to keep soaking the rings & driving it hard, so that's what I'm going to do.

After last night's logging session, I got a good 30 minutes worth of logs doing varied TPS pulls up mountain roads and along long, empty straights.. I think I've tuned out everything outside the 12-15.5 AFR range.
WOT is at a safe 12.5 with a 12 happy ending, the rest is looking really great.
The new cam definitely comes on over 5K and the solid lifters appear to make 7.5K less mushy.
What can I say, more terrorising the local drivers on the hills, I mean, log-gathering activities, required!

Are you tuning this yourself? Or are you sending the logs to a pro tuna?
