So she's back home. I've restarted the ring cleaning process as documented here : mighty5s.com/thread/3918/smoke-over-throttle-stuck-ringsI did one session of this and saw a big improvement. I'm really enjoying driving this car again. I've had some weird coolant leak I may have mentioned before - there's still been some coolant on my drivers floor mat/pedals after a drive. I've put in a bypass (180 degree hose bend) of the heater core in/out (I can't understand how it could come from the heater core. The area around the core was clean each time I checked.) With the core mostly full of air and mostly empty I should be able to discount that, at least. Whatever is in there is water (I flushed it and then blew what remained out) or air and it won't get pressure. I've capped the tubes in the engine bay. I've reverted to the normal coolant overflow bottle position also from the skuttle area. There's no longer any way coolant should be getting beyond the firewall.

Still some coolant turning up on my drivers floor mat. It's coming from above.
What happens is I drive, and then I find some under my feet.
I suspect it's somewhere soaked *into* the firewall and leaking out with the heat of the engine and the movement of the car.

Have a look at the back of the block where the water temp sensor and water manifold is. It could be leaking from this area and finding its way through a grommet or bolt hole. On a Mk1 its under the coil pack.
Good luck in your search.
Can you get your coolant system pressure tested ?

Interestingly the cursed plug is probably the only location on that side of the car that could be the source, how on earth would coolant be spraying from it into the firewall ? I'm keeping an eye on the coolant level since I did the bypass of the heater core - It's dropped a bit but I did introduce some air as a result of the bypass process....

I had a little look at the cursed plug tonight with a borescope.
I'm going to replace it anyway, but it doesn't look obviously-failed.
The magical coolant leak source mystery continues.

Any chance of putting some kitchen towel along the inside of the firewall? It should highlight where the water is coming in. You’d need to be quick before it wet the entire sheet though.

Have you by chance relocated your screen wash reservoir to the drivers scuttle? If so, that could leak..

Took it for the ITV.
IT FAILED.
It failed on..
CO - 0.8%
Lambda - 1.250 (WTF!)
Not Having a Catalizer - L.O.L.
and the rear fog light bulb.
Lambda was a wonder, so I took it to my friends manga garage and we did a quick smoke test and found the decat's front gasket was leaking. That's fixed now. That should fix the lambda readings.
CO/Not a Cat - I had to go back to retest and remind them there is no cat and this was legally imported & tested without a cat.
The post-1986 no-cat ITV CO limit is 3.5% which I'm very very well under. :-)
--
While they did the test I was ooking at the AFRs on my sensor gauge and it was pegged between 14.5 and 15 so I was a bit shocked. Fairly obvious to me there was a leak at that point.
I actually spent a while the day before tuning the idle AFRs just to pass the test.
--
So now the leak is fixed, I'll replace the bulb and take it back to these dopes tomorrow and explain, it's a 1992 car, there is no cat, please retest the lamba and check the bulb and give me my yellow sticker kplz.
I might take them flowers, also.

They're all girls behind the desk. They're the ones who put 'catalizer' test on the sheet for the boys in the overgrown shed.

Turned up at 5pm. One lady behind the desk. Quite polite. I told her that the car was given the Cat test and it shouldn't be, that it's a 1992 and imported via change of residence (the magic way to get a car modded) and she took it back to the head of station. Head of station is a really depressed guy. And nobody likes him. He was rubbing his head, looking down, in his office, the whole time.
Took the car into the retest line. They checked the CO (didn't even bother with the lambda.. lol) confirmed it's 0.8% and gave me my yellow 2022 sticker.
One of the chaps who actually passed my Blue car perviously, asked a bit about the car and I showed him around it. He loved it. I told him I'd tried to import my cars with their station previously but they refused to pass the cars despite the open rules regarding immigration-with-vehicles. He told me the whole shop floor considers the head boy a dipship. XD
I'm determined to send them flowers now.
