Update - not done much with the mx5 to be honest - driving it and slowly putting bits of interior trim back in after fitting the roll bar.
I did do the nc500 in a Skoda! And it was an epic trip.
The engine build is going slow. But it's giving me time to finish other things and gather parts. After the engine builder checked the clearance and did some maths with the standard cams and race head. I decided to go for some reprofiled Kent cams.

Another update to the build is to give a shout out to Bofi for being understanding in the struggles with sourcing parts.
In short I purchased a E36 tps kit from them to find that only a few days later the price dropped by around 30%.
I called them up to see if some issue had caused the price I paid to be an error or something. Turns out it was a change of supplier that caused the price fluctuation. After some discussion they explained that this was a very unusual situation (covid Brexit etc probably not helping) and offered to refund/give a discount code the difference. So that was nice of them, and I'd add that they have always been helpful when calling up for mx5 information and advice.

Update: Engine is now built - took a fair bit of time but I was in no real hurry. I also wanted reprofiled cams which took about 4 weeks.
I now need to get everything ready for fitting and mapping - some of the parts I have sourced have been gathering dust for well over a year.
In short the engine is as follows:
Rebuilt Long nose bottom end (standard mazda 115 bhp pistons) Blink race head (rebuilt with new genuine stem seals) Kent fast road cams
It will be interesting to see how it performs - I know I could have much more easily and cheaply sourced a 1.8 vvt unit but I wanted to retain some originality
I will upload some pics soon...

Engine pic for those interested. I will have a fair few parts for sale soon definitely got the JDM wizard ECU a tweaked skuzzle AFM and possibly an ARC chamber (depends on fit may need to revert to standard intake tubing.) PM if interested.

If anyone is interested in a arc magic chamber for a 1.6 in good condition drop me a message.

Ok, update time.... I dropped the car off at the engine/Dyno place a little over a week ago. I just got word that the engine has been mapped and made a smidge over 147 hp - I'm really happy with that considering that is with the standard air box (albeit with AFM delete). I reckon a few more horses could have been unlocked if I'd put a cone filter on and not had to get standard fuel but it just so happened another MK1 with a standard engine, a few bolt ons and jenvey throttle bodies with me442 made 131 hp. Pics and a video to follow.

Ok soooo - picked the car up today. First impressions are that everything on the install looked very tidy. Nice wiring of the iat and new hardware on the AFM delete. On the road the car is very different power low down in the revs can be felt In normal driving but putting the foot down it definitely feels much more race car - after 4k rpm there is a noticeable surge of power that doesn't taper off all the way to the redline. Surprisingly at lower speeds the car feels very smooth and well mannered. I had a 60 odd mile trip home and drove on a wide range of roads. I do think the map may need some tweaks... As idle was not the greatest but then again I was told my idle valve was a little dodgey. I need to do more research on the me221 but one question that has occurred to me is this you will see there is no map line running from the inlet manifold? Is this not needed if an iat is used? Please see pics and video below. Bwwwwaaaaaaapppppp.

Seeing NA hp numbers like this is not helping me park the idea of throttle bodies, very nice indeed

Does anyone know about the map query? - Just curious as I know the vac line is supplied with the kit but it's not been used by the chap that set it up.

How is the tune setup ? Most aftermarket ECU setups with the original manifold should be a MAP setup, and the MAP connector is on the ECU itself. The 'how much air' is a combo of MAP and temperature readings. You absolutely need the IAT. One of the whole benefits of doing the MAP setup is it gets rid of the restrictive MAF Check for an air line running to your ECU, which has the MAP sensor onboard..
