Went for a wee drive and WOW what a difference, it feels like a *car* now, not a weird death machine. If that's the difference a high idle makes, I can't wait to get this thing tuned... better get a move on with changing all the fluids in prep then, I guess.

Spent much of the day overtaking stuff around Stirlingshire. I need to find some roads that aren't full of 50mph boring people. When I got back I put a load of the interior back in so I have a stereo again, and some carpet, and a console and I can turn the heater on... phew. I am SORE though, that is a fair mammoth task with all that seats out crap.
I've just ordered a stubby aerial from mx5parts since just before last winter I ended up cutting off the whip antenna so I could get the anti-rain-on-the-inside cover on. Now, getting on for 18 months later or something stupid, I finally got the damn thing to crack. Pretty sure they're supposed to undo by hand, but I had to use all kinds of clamps and spanners. So, I've got the stub of the whip out, and re tightened down the mast so water can't get under it anymore... I don't really like radio much tbh, but it'd be nice to have the choice and the alternative would have needed the hole welding up.
I did not get it sideways at all. But also no-one sees you coming do they? I get more people pulling out on me than when I'm on my *bike*, maybe I need a more offensive exhaust? Oh speaking of, I booked my bike in to get fixed in case I want another option to achieve passive and accidental vehicular suicide.

Nothing groundbreaking to suggest, but for the sake of documenting it, the radio reception doesn't seem much improved and my head unit seems to only know how to *search* for stations and I can't manually tune it into the number I want, which is a bit dull. Ah well, in fairnesss the only comparison I have is the DAB thingy in the Polo and my head unit is as old as the Eunos, pretty much.

Something meaningful today! I have a mental list of things to do before going for a tuneeeee; which really should go on a whiteboard; obviously 'buy a whiteboard' is on my mental list of things to do as well. Anyway, whilst there's no point taking a car with bust sensors or ten year old oils, there's also no point taking a car that's leaking boost. £40+ for one of your ebay boost leak testers struck me as madness, so off to the mcgyver store[1] I went to spend a heady £1.15 on this:
Which has a 12mm hole in it and a male euro air fitting wound into a female 'normal' fitting to get it to seal on the oring. If by any chance you want to find the exact bit[2], here's another piccy of the label
Anyhoo, standard fare, you punch it in your intake:
and shove a really cheap compressor up it:
I've only shoved a couple of psi in it, sprayed it down with soapy water, and started chasing down the bits that bubble. I've solved two, aggravated a third and at least *located* a fourth but I think the car needs to go up on ramps for me to get at it sensibly. Nothing solved, but a solid step in the right direction for fixing this and the price seemed right.
[1] B&Q [2] Your tube sizing matters, obviously. I took an offcut with me to see what would squeeze in.

Boost leak testers are good things. You may want to consider a plug on the tb side as well, to be able to try the boost pipes to higher pressures.

I guess your right, but that would blow the budget completely at £2.30 total outlay!

Obviously a concern. perhaps you could offer it up for rent to make it up later on?

At first i was kind of concerned about having a 'nut' on the inside of the plug in case it fell off and into the turbine, but then I twigged that the turbine would't be spinning so damage would be unlikely... mind you if there was a serious leak down stream, the air volume in the compressor could spin it up, I guess I should get a trigger in my air system so the volume is restricted during tests. I shouldn't actually need to get on ramps to get at the pipework, just get the bumper back off. I won't have a chance to have a go at it till the weekend after this one though, ho hum.
So I guess isolate the boost pipework from the throttle body and test from the air filter to the end of the system at the highest pressure I dare, then refit to the throttle body and test that at a lower pressure, because I could have leaks between the throttle body and the plenum. The biggest leak is the joint between a silicon 45 and the intercooler, but there's a nice little bubble blower where I have the idle circuit (I think?) plumbed into the 45 going into the throttle body. It's a question mark shaped thick vacuum hose which used to connect to the side of the plastic plenum that went across the front of the engine. I'm hoping perhaps if I stick a bit of gasket sealant into that part it might cure that.

I've removed that section on my 1.6, blanked the ISV port & the port in the crossover pipe (pre-turbo prep) so far Idle is good & stable, no issues starting with good road-manners (don't think any diferent to before 'fiddlin...) can adjust idle with a 'bleed' screw on the throttlebody so is the ISV needed??? Rich.

My compressor was a bit sick because I'd tried to convert it from euro to standard fittings and obviously that lead to me splitting the port on the regulator, winding in tapered threads too far or generally using cheap castings on very very cheap parts. I goobered it up with a load of JB weld, but evidently not enough because although it *works* as a compressor, having a moderate leak is annoying when trying to listen for boost leaks next to a whistling compressor.
So, that's sitting on its side in the garage with a load more goop setting on it.. I don't really think it's going to fix it, but I suspect changing out the regulator for a new one will *probably* just strip something else, so maybe it's an excuse to get a better compressor.
Car? well having resolved the boost leak from the ICV hose the leak moved to the 'tap' into the silicone which allowed that hose to connect. Today I pulled that bit of silicone off and re-did that tap (it's one of those ones where you cut a hole in the 45 elbow and clamp a tube into the side wall with an o-ring to seal.. the destructions *did* say some ptfe may be needed in some applications, so I've added some to the threads.. Of course I can't test that till Sunday because the compressor bodge needs time to harden. After that I'll rip the front off and seal up the rest of the holes, which should just be a case of seating and clamping the silicone better.

Buy a cheap cigar and build a smoke tester. The whiste won't conceal that.

I'm now working on how to fix up my top door cards... I have replacement cards that need covering in some nice trim, but the problem is the top cards have the little posts that the screws go into in various states of 'Canoeed'. I'm unsure whether to cut them off flush and epoxy in some new posts, or try and rebuild the ones that are half bust. I can't seem to find any top cards for sale anywhere atm. abooo.

Compressor seems to be holding pressure without leaking, so that's cool. I had a really stubborn intercooler connection that was irritating to get nipped up. I also located another not fully done up clamp which let go loudly around 4 atmospheres which i think is possibly way more than the car is ever going to run at it's holding 2bar easily now. My wastegate pressure seems to be around 8 - 9 psi on the boost gauge which is 0.5 - 0.6 bar ish. Anyhoo, I've got my induction and turbo chatter noises back. I switched the sidelights out for LEDs (I just happened to have some suitable lying around) because one of them had wiggled loose and the bulb had smashed, the holders are decayed so I've ordered a couple of replacement pigtails from autolink to spruce those sockets up. I'd lost a screw out of one the sidelight units so that's also on order. My car seems to be invisible to everyone on the roads so just in case it has any impact (or more hopefully that there are no impacts) I've ordered the bits to convert from reflectors to riding lights or whatever you'd call them when they're lit up. All that mince should at least make the front end better lit and less likely to fall out in the road. I should be epoxying up the door cards, but I'm scared. I suck.
